Orange Is the New Black’s Danielle Brooks to Be Girls’ First Black Cast Member

The cast of Orange Is the New Black is enjoying tremendous success after the Netflix summer show’s first season was met with critical acclaim and quickly found a loyal fanbase. Though the cast is currently filming Season 2 in upstate New York, Danielle Brooks (Taystee) has already booked another high-profile television gig.

During a chat with Ebony, Danielle revealed that she recently filmed an episode of the HBO show, Girls, and earned a special place in the show’s history.

I will be the first Black woman to be on ‘Girls,’ so that’s exciting for me,” she revealed.

And if you think the Girls stint will take away from Danielle’s time on OITNB, then think again! Danielle was promoted to series regular for Season 2, and she couldn’t be happier.

“I found out probably a few days before it was announced. So it was just as much of a shock to me as it was to the world. I knew I was going to return, but I didn’t know how much. With a show like this, about prison, you just never know. Your character could be going to the SHU [Special Housing Unit] or you’re going to die. You never know the spin of it all.”

Taystee is one of our favorite things about OITNB, and now we’ll be able to look forward to her in a groundbreaking role on Girls as well. Get it, girl!
