Michelle Hurst, who portrayed Miss Claudette on the first season of Orange Is the New Black, has just awoken from a 16-day medically-induced coma after sustaining serious injuries in a car accident. Now her friends are rallying behind her to raise money that will help Michelle pay for her mounting medical expenses and time off work.
The OITNB star, who is currently in the ICU at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital in North Carolina, was in a car accident before the holidays and was put into a coma in order to enable doctors to perform surgeries close to her spine. Now Piper Kerman, whose memoir is the basis for the fictional Netflix original series, as well as Michelle’s co-star Natasha Lyonne (Nicky Nichols), are calling for donations.
It looks like they’re close to hitting their goal — at the time of publishing they are less than $500 from their $5,000 goal. Michelle is not expected to return for Orange Is The New Black’s second season (since her character’s assault on a guard likely landed her in a maximum security facility), but the actress does have a supporting role in an upcoming release entitled Hard Sell, with Kristin Chenoweth and 30 Rock’s Katrina Bowden.
We wish Michelle a swift and full recovery!
