Because of the way Emmy nomination periods work, this is the first year Orange Is the New Black was eligible for TV's highest honor. People wondered if the Emmys would warm up to the edgy dramedy, but there was no reason to worry: nominations came out this morning, and the Netflix hit picked up an impressive 12 nods!
OITNB submitted as a comedy, and was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, where it's up against four-time winner Modern Family, plus The Big Bang Theory, Louie, Silicon Valley, and Veep. Modern Family has proved impossible to dethrone so far, but maybe Orange Is the New Black will be the show to do it.
The ladies of Litchfield also did very well. Taylor Schilling (Piper) was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy, Kate (Mulgrew) got an Outstanding Supporting Actress nod, and Uzo Aduba (Crazy Eyes), Laverne Cox (Sophia) and Natasha Lyonne (Nicky) all scored recognition in the Outstanding Guest Actress category.
To round out the good news, the show also picked up noms for Outstanding Writing, Outstanding Directing, Outstanding Art Direction and three noms for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing.
