Orange Is the New Black isn't just a smart, witty, consistently entertaining TV show — it's also downright revolutionary when it comes to the diversity of female characters. One of those characters is Sophia Burset (Laverne Cox), one of media's few fully realized trans characters who’s actually played by a trans actress. Now Laverne has made Emmy history as the first transgender Emmy nominee.
"I dreamed big and wild my whole life," Laverne gushed to E! about the nom. "I honestly can't believe it; it's really happening."
Well, Laverne might not be able to believe it, but we sure can! There's a reason Sophia was one of the breakout characters of Season 1 (which is what this nom is for) — she's funny, sympathetic, and complicated, and Laverne deftly brought all sides of her to life. Emmy nom? Totally earned!
Sophie was one of three Orange Is the New Black stars nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy; she's joined by Natasha Lyonne (Nicky) and Uzo Aduba (Crazy Eyes). Orange Is the New Black was also nominated for Outstanding Comedy, and Taylor Schilling (Piper) and Kate Mulgrew (Red) got nods for Outstanding Actress and Supporting Actress in a Comedy, respectively.
