Orphan Black Season 2: Is Alison’s Play, Blood Ties, a Real Musical?

Sure, Orphan Black is mostly an action thriller about a bunch of clones trying to find out their origin and avoid a creepy religious cult, but it’s certainly not without its comedic hijinks. Take virtually every scene with Alison Hendrix (Tatiana Maslany). The latest Alison exploits that have left us giggling involve her role in Blood Ties, which seems from what little we’ve seen of it like the most ridiculous musical in the history of song and dance. Surely it can’t be real... right?

Wrong. Written by Anika Johnson and Barbara Johnston, Wired reports that Blood Ties is a real, full-length musical, from its choreography involving mops to its songs about blood in the bathroom. Not only did they authorize its use in the show, but the creators consulted in its adaptation for the few episodes that have featured excerpts.

We can’t vouch for how good it is when put on professionally, but the show creators admit they asked Anika and Barbara to play up the camp factor big time in the choreography and stage direction. On top of that, everyone involved strove to really make it look like a bad community production.

According to Anika and Barbara, show creators John Fawcett and Graeme Manson asked them to “give the script a real Waiting for Guffman style of excellent amateurism, and encouraged us to create dance moves, staging, and vocal arrangements that were as corny and over-the-top as possible.” Mission accomplished, ladies.

As if Alison and her co-stars weren’t bad enough, the troubled clone, racked with guilt over what happened to Aynsley, overdid it with the liquid courage before curtain and walked right off the stage in the middle of a musical number. Well, Cosima did tell her to break a leg, right?

Orphan Black airs Saturdays at 9 p.m. PT/ET on BBC America.

Don't miss the episode.
