Orphan Black Speculation: Is Sarah the Only Clone Who Can Have Kids?
The more we watch Orphan Black unfold, the more it seems being the results of a giant cloning experiment may actually be the least interesting thing about the show’s leading ladies.
Let’s see: Cosima has a mysterious respiratory illness, and it seems she’s not the first clone with that diagnosis. Helena appears to be remarkably resilient for a mortal — plus, as we found out in Season 2, Episode 2, her heart is on the right side of her body. On top of all these biological quirks that may or may not have been programmed into their DNA, it appears so far that Sarah is the only clone who can physically become pregnant.
At least, that seems to be the implication so far. Toward the end of Season 1, it was revealed that Alison, who has two adopted children, is infertile. The late Beth Childs had also discovered she was unable to bear biological children, which may have contributed to her depression. In Season 2, Episode 2, “pro-clone” Rachel Duncan adds further support for this theory when she suggests to Cosima that Sarah’s ability to procreate is unique — and puts her to work to find out why.
That said, if Helena split from the same embryo as Sarah, couldn’t it be that she too is able to bear children? Considering she’s a bit of a religious zealot, raised by nuns, we somehow doubt she’s tested the waters.
