Tonight’s Oscars 2014 broadcast took an unexpectedly emotional turn when Pink came out and did a showstopping tribute to the Judy Garland classic Wizard of Oz — with Judy’s children Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft, and Joey Luft just feet away in the audience. Seriously, we didn’t see that one coming!

No one has ever doubted that Pink is a great performer — did you catch her gravity-defying aerial act at the 2014 Grammys? — but tonight she really showed off her killer vocals. The “Just Give Me a Reason” singer stepped out onto the stage in a perfect ruby red slipper-inspired sparkling gown to do a stirring rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

As scenes from the 1939 film were projected in the background, Pink literally stopped us in our tracks as she hit every note with feeling — and then some! Seriously guys, who knew that we were going to need tissues like an hour before the In Memoriam? If you didn’t gain a new respect for Ms. Alecia Moore after this one, you weren’t watching the same performance we were.

The audience was clearly floored, honoring her with a standing ovation at the song’s conclusion. And Liza and her siblings were clearly moved, brushing away some tears. Now excuse us while we go re-watch this with a fresh box of Kleenex!
