Our 5 Favorite Pretty Little Liars Moments in Honor of the 100th Episode

It’s hard to believe that Pretty Little Liars will air its 100th episode tonight! It seems like just yesterday these girls were re-forging their friendships in the pilot, with only the slightest understanding of the role “A” would play in their lives moving forward. Ninety-nine episodes later, we’re reflecting back on everything that has come before, choosing our 5 favorite moments from of PLL thus far...

“A” Hits Hanna With Her Car (Season 1, Episode 10)

Though PLL’s first half-season was full of memorable moments, it was this summer finale-ender that stands out in our memory as one of our favorite moments ever. Sure, it was terrible to watch Hanna get struck by a car while the rest of the Liars looked on, but it was the first time we truly realized the stakes of the “A” game. Furthermore, the best twists get better with age, and looking back on this moment with the knowledge that Mona aka Hanna’s BFF at the time was the one behind the wheel only makes it more heartbreaking.

Emily Comes Out to Her Father (Season 1, Episode 11)

One of the most important stories PLL has told was Emily’s coming out to her family and friends. There are so many moments that have defined Emily’s ever-evolving understanding of her own sexual identity, but the scene in which she tells her father that she is gay was a particularly powerful one. We were so proud of Emily in this moment!

Mona is Revealed As “A” (Season 2, Episode 25)

Talk about a heart-in-your-throat moment! Spencer finally figures out that Mona is “A”. Unfortunately, she is trapped in Mona’s lair with the villainess herself when she does so, the rest of the Liars still back at the school’s masquerade ball. Mona knocks Spencer out, then drives her at breakneck speed to Lookout Point, offering her an ultimatum: join the “A” Team or die. PLL doesn’t do so well with the answers, but this was one moment in PLL history that was totally satisfying. We’re not sure PLL has been able to pull that off again since.

Spencer Confesses in Group Therapy (Season 3, Episode 22)

One of the most compelling arcs of PLL so far has been Spencer’s spiral into depression following Toby’s seeming betrAyal and death in Season 3. After going catatonic in the woods, Spencer is admitted to Radley, where she gives this heartbreaking speech in group therapy, imagining Hanna, Aria, and Em are the ones she’s really speaking to: “How do you keep going when the worst thing has happened? What do you have to change inside to survive? Who do you have to become? I don’t expect you guys to understand. You don’t know me … I’m sorry, but that’s true. You don’t know who I am anymore. And you can’t count on me.” Watching Spencer try and fail to process the emotional pain the “A” game has caused was one of the most honest moments this show has produced.

Ali Tells the Liars Her Story (Season 4, Episode 24)

Is it cheating to pick an entire episode? We don’t care. This episode, in which Alison explains to the Liars what happened on the day of her almost-death, was a long-time coming and, in our minds, more important that the initial reveal that Ali was still alive. Through the use of some amazing flashbacks, this ep is chock-full of answers we so richly deserved. Though we still don’t know who hit Ali over the head, we do know that it was someone Mrs. DiLaurentis was willing to protect. We also know that Mona was the one who convinced Ali to leave town. Though we’re guessing we’ll be getting more information regarding this day further down the road, we can now fill in many of the blanks. This was a turning point for the show, the beginning of a new era: The Return of Ali. Whatever happens next, this will always be one of our favorite moments in PLL history.
