With Sandra Oh's (Cristina Yang) decision to leave Grey's Anatomy after Season 10, all eyes are on the other members of the show's original cast — Patrick Dempsey (Derek Shepherd), Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey), Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey), Justin Chambers (Alex Karev), and James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber) — whose contracts also expire after the upcoming season. Since the series shows no signs of stopping next year, will the actors?
In a new interview with TVLine, Patrick mulls over that very question, especially considering his racing career has taken off and seems to have become the 47-year-old's main passion. (His four-part miniseries, Patrick Dempsey: Racing Le Mans, premieres Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 10 p.m. ET on Velocity.)
"I would love to [pursue racing full-time]. It depends on sponsorships. It depends on not being on a show. It’s kind of amazing, the [commitment] level I have right now with the amount of responsibility I have with the show and everything else."
Does his new high-speed profession mean that he won't be a part of Season 11? From the sound of it, Patrick is unsure — and only certain of his gratitude for the opportunity.
"Everything is open to a conversation at this point," he explains. "Grey’s has been such a remarkable ride. [Show creator] Shonda [Rhimes] has been incredibly supportive. I enjoy Grey’s more than ever in many ways. Our relationships have grown considerably. We’ve all matured over the last 10 years. So it would be a shame to end this."
"We’re talking," he adds. "We’ll see what happens."
