Uh-oh, MerDer shippers. Patrick Dempsey (Derek Shepherd) has a plan for how Derek could be ushered out of the storyline, and it doesn't bode well for our favorite dark-and-twisty power couple.
In the Aug. 26 issue of TV Guide, the 47-year-old talks about his new career as a racecar driver and his future on Grey's Anatomy, asserting that he's open to "having a discussion" about extending his contract, which is set to expire at the end of Season 10.
But what's worrisome is that Patrick has Derek's exit all planned out, and he sounds excited about the prospect of a swan song.
He says that the Grey's writers have Derek working on President Obama's brain-mapping agenda in Season 10. That project, proposed by the President in April, seeks to unlock the "enormous mystery" of our gray matter through extensive research.
But that very storyline could segue into Derek leaving Seattle, Patrick says. "[It] will allow Derek to rediscover his love for surgery and give him a higher purpose. Derek would have to go away to work on that, which would bring a new dynamic to his relationship with Meredith [Ellen Pompeo]. I don't think they can ever be totally happy."
Higher purpose? New dynamic? Stop sounding so excited, P!
