Patrick Dempsey Raises $1 Million for Cancer with The Dempsey Challenge

If Patrick Dempsey’s charm and good looks weren’t enough for you to fall in love with the Grey’s Anatomy actor, here’s a new reason that just might tip the scales for you: he’s got the biggest heart ever.

Over the weekend, Patrick held a fundraiser to raise money for the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer, Hope, & Healing, which is part of the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Maine. According to The Republic, almost 4,000 people came out to run, walk, and bike in the fifth annual Dempsey Challenge, which was inspired by Patrick losing his own mother to ovarian cancer in 2008.

The fundraiser itself raised over $1 million, which is expected to grow to $1.2 million by the time the final numbers are in. Patrick may not be a surgeon in real life, but his fundraiser will definitely help save lives.

Opened in 2008, the Patrick Dempsey Centerprovides free support, education and integrative medicine services to anyone impacted by cancer” and offers services like counseling, a children’s program, and a cancer resource lending library.

Earlier this year, Patrick was honored for his philanthropic efforts at the 2013 Do Something awards. We’re glad to see he’s being recognized for all the good he does — he and that perfect head of hair deserve it!

Derek Shepherd would definitely approve.
