With all of the TV work that Pauly D is doing these days, it's easy to forget that the Jersey Shore alum is actually a music guy at heart — case in point, the "DJ" usually tacked to the front of his name. After all, the 34-year-old was listed as one of world's highest-paid disc jockeys of 2013. So when are we going to see that long-awaited debut album?
Well, Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with Pauly not too long ago, and we took the chance to find out exactly where the former reality star is with his music career. (He's currently balancing DJ residencies in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.)
We also got him to sound off on his former tourmate Britney Spears's stint in Sin City, his dreams of working with one badass female MC in particular, and what he really thinks of mentor 50 Cent's wacky social media rants. Read on for the scoop!
Wetpaint Entertainment: You and Britney Spears both have residencies in Vegas right now. Did you get to see her show? What did you think?
It's amazing — I went opening day. I was just wowed. It was like when I toured with her but on a whole other level. They spent so much money on the production, and you can see it. I'd been there before she had her residency, and it's like a brand new place. They redesigned it just for her.
Have you kept in touch with Britney since you toured together? Has she been to see your show at all?
Because we have the same management, sometimes when I'm in L.A., I'll see her there. And now [there's] this Vegas thing, so she's in Vegas a lot. She hasn't come to my shows yet, but I hope so!
What's the status of your debut album?
Still working on it, but I want it to be perfect. That's why I was coming out with songs sporadically, like we did "Back to Love" and "Night of My Life." I want to drop a few more singles before I do the album, so I'm taking my time with it.
Any singles in the works that you're excited about?
Yes, but I can't talk about it yet. You'll definitely see it before the end of the year. It's a different sound. I wanted my album to be a reflection of me DJing, and I'm open format, so I wanted different genres of music. That's why I put out "Back to Love" — it wasn't really a club banger but more for the radio. I want to put out a little bit of everything so everybody can vibe to it.
Is there somebody you're really hoping to collaborate with that you haven't yet?
I'd love to work with Nicki Minaj — that would be dope. She's really killing it right now. I think everybody knows I've worked with Christina Milian a bit. We did a record. I think that surprised a lot of people. She's cool and we've remained friends after that.
What's your song of the summer for 2014?
It's got to be Calvin Harris's "Summer." It's such an anthem right now. I got a bunch of different versions of it, and I get crazy reactions from the crown when I play them. I've actually seen him perform it live, and people go nuts.
You seem to work with 50 Cent a lot — both as an artist on his label, and with the headphones line. What's your relationship like?
Super, super cool guy. He's really smart when it comes to business. It might be unorthodox at times — you'll see the crazy tweets and rants — but believe me, he does it all for a reason. He knows exactly what he's doing.
