Paul McDonald’s Rhinestone Suit Set Him Back $4,500!
Paul McDonald has been one of American Idol Season 10’s stand-out talents. He’s got smooth vocals unlike any we’ve heard on Idol and a likable, unassuming on-stage manner. But while Paul’s vocals may be quieter than some of his belt-y, showstopping Idol compatriots, his wardrobe is anything but. Paul has rocked some seriously flashy duds this season, specifically one rhinestoned jacket and pants combo that had Jennifer Lopez doing a double-take.
Paul’s trademark white suit is actually modeled after that of a rock-country legend, Gram Parsons. Parsons played with such acts as The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers, and has himself influenced a whole genre of music — alt-country, which boasts such super-cool current acts as Wilco and Ryan Adams.
But we have to wonder, how does Paul afford to dude himself up in such natty clothes? He has mentioned in interviews on numerous occasions that he has long been a touring musician, just trying to get by. So where’d the bedazzling bread come from? According to Paul, he saved up for the suit’s whopping $4,500 (!) price tag. He recently told The Hollywood Reporter, "[The suit] broke my bank. But it was an investment, like a guitar."
But now that Paul’s a big success on Idol, he’d have no problem buying himself a whole closet-full! Like all Idol contestants at this stage, Paul’s getting a reported $2,800 a week, not to mention that since singing his Top 13 performance of Rod Stewart’s “Maggie May,” his first album with band The Grand Magnolias has rocketed up the iTunes rock charts to #3.
