Paul Wesley on Directing The Vampire Diaries: Everyone Was Fantastically Supportive

We still have to wait two weeks for Paul Wesley’s (Stefan Salvatore) directorial debut with Season 5, Episode 18 (“Resident Evil”) of The Vampire Diaries, but Paul has already opened up about how enjoyable the experience was. What did he tell E! Online about his supportive co-stars?

"It was amazing. I mean it was really amazing. The cast was so supportive. I was nervous at first. I mean, I remember my first scene — I was terrified," Paul confessed. "Then it got easier and easier, and it became more natural, and now it just feels like I want to do it again and I want to do it even better. But it was a really wonderful experience."

As for his fellow castmates, Paul admits that he thought they would tease him much more. The reality was that the cast was “fantastically supportive.”

“Not that I doubt the cast, but I kind of thought these guys were gonna totally give me shit, in a friendly way, but I assumed everyone would just give me sh-t, but everyone was really prepared and really wanted to do well, which was to me really, not surprising, but I was definitely taken aback to a degree." Aww. Never doubt the TVD family!

Though, the cast did play at least one prank on their co-star/director. As Paul explained at the TVD PaleyFest panel, Nina Dobrev(Elena Gilbert) surprised him with a special something: "My first day of directing, I walk into my dressing room and there's a wrapped gift," Paul recounted, adding that there was a letter from Nina congratulating him on the “next phase” of his career. He unwrapped the present to find… "A giant portrait of Nina Dobrev. It was huge and now it's hanging in my dressing room."

But, it wasn’t any of Paul’s co-stars he found difficult directing — it was himself! Paul told E! Online: "That was hard for me because I had a playback monitor, but at the same time, I almost didn't want to even look at it, because I hate watching myself. We would like, shoot the scene and then I would like literally look at it for maybe two seconds just to make sure it was lined up right and then move on." So, if Paul’s performance in Episode 18 seems a little off, blame the director!

Are you as surprised as Paul was that the cast didn’t give him a harder time? Sound off in the comments below!

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
