Vampire Diaries star Paul Wesley (Stefan) took the stage to accept the Humane Generation Award at the Humane Society of the United States’ 60th anniversary gala over the weekend, he turned the attention to the millions of young TVD fans who he meets in his work as actor and activist. What did he have to say?

According to Variety’s coverage of the event, Paul was “blushing” at the description of the actions he has taken to earn the award — i.e. using his celebrity to educate millions on the horrors of factory farming. Paul addressed how TVD has made that possible, saying in his acceptance speech: “I know that one of the main reasons that I’m here is because I happen to be on a television series that has a massive youth following.”

And Paul seems to think his efforts are worthwhile, reaching a younger generation who he believes will do what’s right when presented with unsettling facts: “I think it’s really important for me to say with confidence that, based on the interactions that I’ve had with Vampire Diaries fans all over the world, young people today are comprised of an incredible morally grounded generation,” Paul said. “When presented with logic and with facts, they want to do the right thing. So ultimately I think this Humane Generation Award is representative of the younger generation that want to and will take the right steps to create a positive change for the future.”

We’re so proud of Paul for his efforts to use his celebrity to make a positive difference, and glad to see the actor getting recognized for taking action against something he believes is wrong. Keep up the impressive work, Paul!

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
