Penny Dreadful: Who Are the Supporting Characters?

Now that we’ve all been formally introduced to the creepy world of Showtime’s Penny Dreadful, we’re in for a wild ride. The creepy series focuses on Victorian England and the things that go bump in the night, reinventing some of the classic gothic characters of the era and retelling their stories like we’ve never seen.

Leading the pack for the series are Josh Hartnett (Ethan Chandler), a Van Helsing-esque character who is both unafraid and complicated, and Eva Green (Vanessa Ives), a mysterious heroine who can hold her own in a man’s world. While these two are some of the biggest names leading the show, they aren’t alone.

Check out the other key players on this spooky drama:

Timothy Dalton (Sir Malcolm Murray):Timothy is a two-time James Bond, playing the role of 007 in The Living Daylights and License to Kill. He’s no stranger to playing quintessential roles from literature, having once played Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. He’s been in the business since the 1960s and has played everything from Mr. Pricklepants in Toy Story to Lord President on Doctor Who.

On Penny Dreadful, Sir Malcolm is a rough-and-tumble man who has had his fair share of adventures. That being said, his main goal now is to find his daughter, Mina Harker (Olivia Llewellyn).

Harry Treadaway (Dr. Victor Frankenstein): A relative newcomer to the acting game, Harry Treadaway recently starred in the Johnny Depp-led version of The Lone Ranger as Frank. Now that he’s added an “-enstein” to his name, he plays one of the most popular figures of gothic literature: Dr. Victor Frankenstein, a man on a mission to discover the secrets of the human life.

Rory Kinnear (The Creature): Playing Dr. Frankenstein’s creature is Rory Kinnear, who recently starred in Skyfall as Tanner. He’s been in a slew of other TV shows and has voiced many characters in various James Bond video games, but now he’s playing the product of the miracles of science, being born thanks to the crazy doctor’s exploratory experiments.

Billie Piper (Brona Croft): Billie Piper got a massive break when she was cast in the reboot of Doctor Who as Rose Tyler, the companion of Christopher Eccleston’s incarnation of the titular character, the ninth in the series. She then played the companion of the 10th incarnation, played by David Tennant, before she got trapped in an alternate universe.

Now, as Brona Croft, Billie plays an Irish immigrant seeking to escape her dark past. What did she do? You’ll have to watch and see!

Reeve Carney (Dorian Gray): Reeve Carney is an American singer-songwriter who dabbles in acting. He most recently played Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man) in the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. Tweens might recognize him more from his appearance as Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriend in her “I Knew You Were Trouble” music video. Now he stars on the Showtime series as Dorian Gray, a strange man based on the Oscar Wilde character from The Picture of Dorian Gray. We’ll meet his extravagant and charming character in Season 1, Episode 2 (“Séance”).
