People’s Choice Awards 2014: 4 Reasons Why Andrew Lincoln Should Win Favorite TV Anti-Hero

Fandoms have grown to love the anti-hero — the conflicted protagonist with a wobbly moral compass — so much that the People's Choice Awards have added a whole category devoted to him or her. Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) is, of course, up for the award.

It'll be hard for Rick to beat out fellow AMC anti-hero Walter White of Breaking Bad (played by Bryan Cranston), but we think that he should emerge victorious. Here are four reasons why Andrew Lincoln should win a People's Choice Award for his role as Rick Grimes.

Stuff… and Things. This seems like a cop-out answer, as if we were saying "because we said so." But no — we love that this is basically Rick's catchphrase, because it speaks so perfectly to what makes him an anti-hero. Rick holds his intentions and actions close to his chest, which is part of what makes him an effective leader — but it's also the main thing that's caused rifts between him and his group.

Andrew Lincoln's Southern Accent. He's doing so much better! Let’s give credit where credit is due, people.

Rick Grimes Is in His Most Conflicted Point of Development Right Now. Rick has grown as a character, just as everyone else caught in the zombie apocalypse has, throughout the course of the show. But watching him waver between Farmer Rick and the Ricktator has been not only great for us, the viewers, but for showing Rick's multifaceted morality.

Rick Grimes Symbolizes What Anyone Could Become When Faced With Annihilation. Isn't this what the anti-hero is all about? Rick teaches us what we're capable of, while still reminding us of our humanity. Now that we think about it, maybe Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) should win an anti-hero award, too.

The People’s Choice Awards air on January 8, 2014, at 9 p.m. ET on CBS. You can vote at, their official voting app, and on Facebook or Twitter through December 5, 2013.
