Philip Seymour Hoffman Spoke Of His Addiction Just Weeks Before Death

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s tragic death of a heroin overdose might have come as a shock to many of his fans, but Philip wasn’t keeping his addiction a secret when he attended the 2014 Sundance Film Festival two weeks ago.

According to the account magazine publisher John Arundel’s shared with the New York Post of his encounter with Philip during the festival, the legendary 46-year-old actor looked so unrecognizable that John didn’t know who he was at first and asked him what he did for a living.

“He said, ‘I’m a heroin addict,’” John said. Once Philip took his hat off, John was able to identify him, but as he walked away Philip added that he “just got out of rehab.”

“Obviously he wanted people to know he was in recovery mode,” John said.

In May 2013, Philip checked into a detox program when he relapsed after being sober for 20 years. As soon as he realized his problem with heroin and prescription drugs, he decided to enter the 10-day program to stave off his addiction. Unfortunately, the program wasn’t enough to save his life.

The most recent investigations into Philip’s death report that 65 bags of heroin (and 5 additional empty bags) were found in his apartment by police, where Philip was found dead with a hypodermic needle in his arm by a friend on Sunday after he was late to pick up his kids.

His autopsy, which was scheduled to be performed Monday, is still incomplete.
