Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Family Reacts to Death: “We Are Devastated”

Philip Seymour Hoffman's sudden death has been hard on all of us. But it's especially tough for his family, and his family members have released a statement reacting to the tragic news.

Philip was found dead in his Manhattan apartment at age 46 on February 2. The cause of death has yet to be confirmed, but police reports reveal that a syringe was found sticking out of his arm. Philip has previously struggled with a heroin addiction, checking himself into a 10-day detox program last year.

"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone," his family says in a statement.

"This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving," the statement continues. "Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers."

Philip has two sisters and a brother. His brother wrote the screenplay for the 2002 film Love Liza, in which Philip starred as someone who's addicted to huffing gasoline fumes.

Philip had been in a longtime relationship with costume designer Mimi O'Donnell. The couple has three children together, none of which are yet in their teens.
