Game of Thrones Picks Up TCA Nominations

Game of Thrones continues to grow in popularity, so it’s no surprise that the award nominations are once again starting to roll in for HBO’s gritty fantasy epic. The Television Critics Association has nominated the show in two categories for its 2014 ceremony, to take place on July 19.

GoT will defend its 2013 title in “Outstanding Achievement in Drama” against FX’s The Americans, Netflix’s House of Cards, CBS’s The Good Wife, and AMC’s Breaking Bad.

GoT will also get the chance to unseat defending champion Breaking Bad in the “Program of the Year” category (apparently in 2013 GoT was a better drama than Breaking Bad, but Breaking Bad was a better program?), with The Good Wife, Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, and HBO stablemate True Detective rounding out the field. Bizarrely, Orange Is the New Black is up for “Program of the Year” while being snubbed for “Outstanding Achievement in Comedy,” while True Detective is nominated for “Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries, and Specials” even though its star, Matthew McConaughey, is competing in the “Individual Achievement in Drama” category.

Head-scratching nomination procedures aside, it’s good to see GoT picking up some recognition, so best of luck to our favorite show!
