Pregnant Kate Middleton Launches Cruise Ship Before Maternity Leave (PHOTO)
Pregnant Kate Middleton's last official solo appearance before her maternity leave is a doozy. As People reports, she got to break a $1,600 bottle of Moet et Chandon champagne against the hull of a sparkling-new cruise ship!
Kate looked pleased to have the honored role in the ship's traditional christening today, June 13, in Southampton, England — using scissors to cut a cord, which sent a Nebuchadnezzar of bubbly crashing against the massive boat. (In case you're wondering, in addition to being the name of a Babylonian king and the ship in The Matrix, Nubuchadnezzar is also a term for a 520-ounce bottle. That's the equivalent of 20 normal bottles of champagne!)
The ship in question is the newest addition to the Princess Cruises line: the $735-million Royal Princess. Fitting, huh?
And Kate was the picture of maternal glow, wearing a Dalmatian-print coat and a bespoke hat.
Joining her at the ceremony were Izzie and Charlie Rowbotham, two kids from Kate's charity East Anglia's Children's Hospices. The two youngsters even got the hand Kate the ceremonial scissors.
"We can think of no more fitting godmother for our magnificent new ship," Princess Cruises CEO Alan Buckelew told the audience. "Her Royal Highness is an inspiring ambassador for Britain, and she is admired around the world for her style and grace, and for her compassion for others."
Before she gets to really kick back and enjoy her maternity leave, Kate will first attend the annual Trooping of the Colour, a celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday.
