Pregnant Woman and Unborn Child Die in Tragic Gun Accident
A mother and her unborn child died tragically when a friend accidentally discharged his gun, and shot her in the head.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, 25-year-old Katherine Lynn Hoover — who was 5-months pregnant with her second child — and her husband, Carson, were admiring the gun collection of friend, William DeHayes, in his Brooksville, Florida home. When William was showing off his .22 caliber revolver, it accidentally fired, wounding Katherine in the temple.
Officials say Katherine was taken to a local hospital, then air-lifted to the Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. Doctors attempted to deliver the 5-month-old baby boy, but he survived for only 30 minutes. Katherine was later pronounced dead that evening.
Katherine’s sister, Kayleigh Bryan, told the Tampa Bay Times that her sister “was truly a special person, inside and out. We were blessed to have the time that we had with her. She's going to be missed very much." Katherine was also a mother to 6-year-old son, Nicholas.
A family friend added that Katherine’s husband is distraught and “traumatized...going through the normal range of emotions one would in such a tragedy.”
The Hernando County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident, and declined to comment when asked whether William would be charged with negligence.
