9 \'Pretty Little Liars\' Characters We Love Now But Used to Hate (PHOTOS)

While we've always loved the original four Liars on Pretty Little Liars — Aria, Emily, Hanna, and Spencer — there are plenty beloved characters we didn't always feel so warmly about.

Some are reformed villains we once only loved to hate, while others were simply misunderstood, but all 9 of these PLL characters left a bad taste in our mouths at one point, only to later have us cheering them on.

Scroll through the gallery to see some of the Rosewood characters that won their ways into our hearts.

Having just celebrated her engagement to Emily, it's funny to remember what Sasha Pieterse's character was like back at the beginning. But if you do look back, you'll recall she was quite the evil bitch!

Though Ali gave plenty of people reason to want her dead, she eventually grew into someone we didn't just love to hate but genuinely adored.

Janel Parrish's Mona is a complicated character, so it stands to reason our feelings about her would be equally complicated.

She went from bullied nerd to obnoxious popular girl to psycho villain to an amazing techno-savvy badass who we desperately want to see in her own spin-off.

Admit it, Season 1 Toby, portrayed by Keegan Allen, was creepy AF. Turns out he was the victim of two mean girls — stepsister Jenna and, later, Queen B Alison.

But through his friendship with Emily and, later, his relationship with Spencer, we got to see that the man behind the rumors and hearsay had a heart of gold.

Even if he was a lousy cop, he made for an exceptional boyfriend.

Remember when Paige literally tried to drown Emily? That rivalry paved the way for an affecting coming out story, and one of the show's most storied romances.

Though Paige and Emily didn't end up together, we really grew some major respect for the Rosewood High athletic director, especially for recognizing when it was time to bow out. We've got to give Lindsay Shaw props for making this once loathsome character lovable.

Well, let's couch our current feelings about Mary as conflicted. She did help Elliott Rollins (aka Archer Dunhill) steal all of Alison's money, though she drew the line at killing her.

But she won us over with her love for Spencer, leaving her and Alison the Lost Woods Resort and taking the fall for Archer's death. Still, we're not too mad at her being Mona's prisoner for abetting Spencer's twin, Alex.

We hated this dogged police investigator for quite some time, mostly because she was actually good at her job, which put the Liars in danger of going to jail.

However, with time we grew to sympathize with her frustrations with the Liars' constant obstruction. We felt she truly wanted to help the girls.

Calm down, Ezria shippers. We came around on Ian Harding's character, but his inappropriate relationship with Aria — and his literally being a stalker — made it hard to love him.

We think he more than redeemed himself by the end of the series, though.

It's hard to remember disliking Emily's mom, played by Nia Peeples, but she was so controlling and judgemental when we first met her.

However, not only did she eventually come around to accepting her daughter is gay, but as the series wore on we realized that being controlling stemmed from wanting to protect her only child.

Spencer's big sister, played by the beautiful Torrey DeVitto, didn't grow on us until Season 5, where we started to understand why she was so cold and sketchy.

Turns out, she'd been protecting Spencer from Wilden and, before that, from getting arrested for killing "Alison" — AKA Bethany Young.
