The Biggest \'Pretty Little Liars\' Reveals, Ranked From Best to Worst

As Pretty Little Liars is winding down starting April 2017, we know we are in for loads of jaw-dropping reveals. We still need to know who killed Charlotte (or if she's even dead?), who are the police tracking that is pretending to be Archer Dunhill, and ultimately, yet again, who is "A," aka this time around "A.D."? While we're busy theorizing about all this, let's take a look back at the show's many other crazy reveals above, and rank them from worst to best.

17. What’s In The Trunk? A Pig

This reveal might not have felt half as lame as it was if it didn’t have the misfortune of taking place during a season premiere. As a result, we spent a whole hiatus wondering what was in the trunk that had the Liars so shocked and appalled. We were thinking dead body, we just didn’t expect pig.

This was another “reveal” ruined by the anticipatory context. Promised we’d finally discover the identity of “A” — for real, guys — we had high hopes for the Season 5 finale, only to discover the reveal was just a random name we’d never heard before. (Anagrams don’t count.) Lame.

R.I.P., Mrs. DiLaurentis and everything, but we’re surprised she didn’t get murdered way sooner with all of the secrets she was hiding. Mrs. D.’s death also had the misfortune (as a reveal) of coming at the end of an episode that also included Ezra getting shot protecting the Liars from “A” on a NYC rooftop. That’s hard to compete with.

14. Shana Is (Kind of) "A"

We’re so over supporting characters being revealed as quasi-“A”s with a convoluted motive and minimal buildup. Sure, it was intense to see Shana go after the Liars in that NYC theater, but it also felt like PLL throwing us a bone to distract us from the fact we still hadn’t discovered the identity of the true ringleader of the “A” game.

No offense, Marlene, but we pretty much saw this one coming since the fake Dr. Elliott Rollins showed up on our screen. While it was pretty epic to see him tear off his Detective Wilden mask, it was just a waiting game for real Pretty Little Liars fans until Elliott showed his true evil self.

12. Mona Is Alive

Don’t get us wrong, we are very happy Mona is alive, kicking, and quippy, but every time a show brings a character back from the dead, it limits the stakes of the drama. Mona was the second character to have a fake death, which made the reveal at least semi-eye-roll-inducing.

11. Ezra Is "A" (But Not Really)

11. Ezra Is "A" (But Not Really)

We have to admit: this reveal was pretty awesome. If only PLL had stuck to its gun on it, it might have gone down as the most epic of all PLL reveals. The moment the camera showed us Ezra was the person skulking after the Liars in Ravenswood was awesomely epic, but we had been led on a significant other red herring goose chase before with Toby. This quelled the potential awesomeness of the Ezra is “A” reveal, as does our current knowledge he was never actually “A” at all.

10. Melissa Is The One Who Buried Bethany Young

We actually kind of adore the reveal that Melissa was the one to inadvertently kill Bethany Young by burying her alive to cover what she thought was Spencer’s crime (or so she claims!). Melissa also gets extra points for the way in which she confessed: via video recording to Spencer after she had fled the country. Ballsy, right? However, this reveal gets docked points for still being out of context. We’re still not really sure if Melissa is telling the truth about her part in Bethany Young’s murder or what it means either way.

9. Toby Is On The "A" Team

Even if it turned out to be false, the reveal that Toby was “A” continues to be one of the greatest PLL moments ever. It came at a point in the show when we still kinda, sorta trusted the big reveals, even if they smelled like red herring. The Toby is “A” reveal also has the added benefit of being partially true. Sure, Toby wasn’t “A,” but he was working for the “A” Team.

8. Mona Is Dead

We’ll admit it: this one hit us hard. Sure, now we may know that Mona is OK, but tell that to the versions of us watching the Season 5 mid-season finale. Mona is one of the best characters on this show, so to see her die in such a seemingly gruesome manner after finally making at least quasi-amends with the Liars? Heartbreaking.

7. Jenna Can See

This is a classic, if only for Aria’s famous “Bitch can see” line. No one has ever relayed information with as much clarity, frustration, and sass.

6. Nate Is Lyndon, Maya's Stalker

6. Nate Is Lyndon, Maya's Stalker

We were expecting Maya’s killer to be related to the “A” game, so the reveal that Nate was really Lyndon, aka Maya’s stalker and murderer, was very shocking. The fact that the reveal came as he was kidnapping Emily and Paige and planning to kill them? Definitely heightened the stakes.

We’re still crying about this one. Just when we thought the Liars’ had experienced the worst night ever with the de-hooding of Mona as Original “A,” they make it back home to discover Maya’s dead body has been found. All of the tears.

4. Spencer Is Mary Drake's Daughter

4. Spencer Is Mary Drake's Daughter

Pretty Little Liars did a great job laying the groundwork for revealing that Spencer is Mary Drake's daughter, but the moment when Mary admits it was still OMG. Sure, this is partly because Spencer was shot, maybe dying, at the moment, but also because of the implications it has on the show. We thought that Mary's child could be "A.D." so what does this mean now? Plus, Spencer is related to Alison Dilaurentis, which feels oh so appropriate.

3. CeCe Drake Is Charlotte DiLaurentis and "A"

3. CeCe Drake Is Charlotte DiLaurentis and "A"

This one is high up on the list purely because of how monumental a reveal it was, after so many seasons trying to figure out who "A" was. And while Vanessa Ray's performance was top-notch, some fans were concerned that the big reveal was transphobic, as CeCe/Charlotte's tragic backstory was explored. So though Marlene has opened up about how that was definitely not the intention, it still put a bit of a damper on the biggest reveal the show had so far. Plus, there were some timeline issues and the fact that CeCe dated Jason, which plagued fans. And frankly, PLL had done an "A" reveal better before, as we're about to see.

2. Alison Is Alive

This was a huge game-changer for the show, shifting it from a story of why “A” was after the Liars to why “A” was after Alison. It also eventually breathed new life into a flailing narrative by making room to explore the complicated dynamics the Liars have with their back-from-the-dead bestie, but — even in the moment itself — it was a great reveal. Ali really knows how to make an entrance.

It’s going to be hard to top the Original “A” reveal that had Mona luring Spencer out to her lair only to reveal herself as the Liars’ nemesis. It was scary, heartbreaking, and made total sense all at once.
