Fans of Pretty Little Liars have been divided when it comes to the proposed spin-off, Ravenswood. On one hand, it’s a chance for PLL breakout star Tyler Blackburn (Caleb) to shine — sadly, without Ashley Benson, who plays his on-screen love interest Hanna — but on the other hand, Ravenswood expands the PLL mythology into the supernatural. And when did anything supernatural ever happen in Rosewood? Sure, murder happens on the regular, but Ravenswood is diving deep into deadly curses.
“It’s a chance to tell a kind of story we can’t tell on Pretty Little Liars,” executive producer Joseph Dougherty told Entertainment Weekly in the May 24 issue on stands now. “But by the same token, we think it’s going to appeal to the same audience.”
Co-creator and exec producer Oliver Goldstick added: “In Ravenswood the idea is we’ve living more in a Stephen King corner of Pennsylvania.”
We know how the PLL Powers That Be love to reference Hitchcock, so we’re excited at the idea of adding more supernatural elements. But how will they incorporate them into Pretty Little Liars? Well, with the spin-off centered on Rosewood’s favorite hacker, Caleb Rivers, the writers are using his mysterious and relatively unknown backstory to their advantage.
“[Caleb] is such a well-loved character, we thought, ‘Let’s utilize the fact that his backstory is so much of a mystery to us still and let him take us to this world,” said co-creator and exec producer Marlene King.
The hour-long drama will center "on a town, not far from Rosewood, PA, which has suffered under a deadly curse for generations. Five strangers suddenly find themselves connected by this fatal curse and need to dig into the town's mysterious and terrible history before it's too late for each of them." We’re thinking that Caleb is one of the five connected by the deadly curse.
Caleb will be joining twins Abel and Olivia (Bret Dier and Elizabeth Whitson), foster kid Miranda (Nicole Gale Anderson), and outsider Remy (Britne Oldford). Merritt Patterson also joins the cast as Tess, Olivia’s former best friend.
If you’re still on the fence about Ravenswood, consider this: the stakes are even higher! “I think the stakes will be a lot higher for these teens than they are in Pretty Little Liars.” Whoa. We didn’t think anything could be higher than a psycho stalker with a penchant for murder!
Whatever the stakes, Marlene promises plenty of “OMG and WTF moments” in Ravenswood. Bring it on, Marlene!
Ravenswood will premiere in October 2013, after the Pretty Little Liars Season 4 Halloween episode.
