Season 3 of Pretty Little Liars arguably belonged to the illustrious Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario). “Conflicted,” tweeted PLL writer and producer Joseph Dougherty when asked what we can expect from Spencer this season.
We imagine Spence has a lot to be conflicted about. In the past few months, she let go of everything that used to define her — academics, friendship, her sanity — in a single-minded quest to take “A” down. Will she continue to pursue that path now that she has Toby back, or will she return to her quest of achievement as college nears?
As the hunt for “A” continues, the Liars are going to have to make tough decisions about how much they will sacrifice and who they will trust in an attempt to uncover the truth about Ali’s murder and the identity of “A.” We imagine all of the Liars will be conflicted about their choice to let Mona onto the team and into their circle. This is especially interesting for Spencer, who continues to hold her own sister at arm’s length.
Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) has always been a source of internal conflict for Spencer. On the one hand, she is family and it is near unimaginable (both to Spencer and us) that she would do something to hurt Spence. On the other hand, Melissa lies too often to be trusted. We expect this theme to continue in Season 4, what with all of the Spencer family drama on the menu.
