Pretty Little Liars scribe Joseph Doughtery took to Twitter recently to discuss PLL Season 4. One of his most tweeted-about topics? The ongoing affair that is Aria (Lucy Hale) and Ezra’s (Ian Harding) relationship. What can we expect from Ezria in the upcoming season?

The underlying theme of the Great Ezria Twitter Convo was that Ezria’s problems do not stem from a lack of affection. To any casual viewer of the show, this is pretty darn obvious, but it is still nice to hear that this PLL fact won’t change come Season 4. On the question of whether Aria and Ezra are still “deeply in love” by the end of Season 4.0 (i.e. the first half of the season), Joseph said, “As someone tells Aria: ‘You’re not finished with him.’”

Yeah, they totally love each other. Or, as Joseph succinctly put it: “Hey, they’re nuts about each other. It’s the rest of the world that’s causing the problem.”

As for how those feelings will manifest? Joseph also shared that there will be some “really emotional moments” for Ezria in Season 4. “Emotional” covers a whole range of feelings — anger, frustration, love, longing, jealousy — we hope they hit on all of those, and then some. We suspect jealousy will be a big one, given that Aria has an interesting and complicated relationship with Jake (Ryan Guzman), Rosewood’s resident martial arts instructor. Fans questioned Aria’s motivation in dating someone so soon after her break-up, to which Joseph obtusely explained: “Rebound can be as rough as whiplash.” We’re not sure if we envy poor Jake’s chances...

The way we see it, even though Ezria will not be an item come Season 4, that doesn’t mean they won’t still be as integral a storyline as ever. This is about exploring the relationship between Aria and Ezra in a different form. It may not be sexual or even romantic for a while, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t still there. Hopefully, we learn more about who these two characters are — both together and apart — in Season 4, and after a relatively lackluster Season 3 for Aria and Ezra, we’re excited about that.
