When Pretty Little Liars creator Marlene King hinted that Toby and Alison had a complicated past (and friendship), we didn’t know what to think. It was difficult to imagine them as anything but enemies, but in tonight’s Season 4 premiere (“A is for A-l-i-v-e”), we saw them in a whole new light.

It all started with a text from A (as most things do). While Toby was driving the mobile lair around, his phone beeped with this message: "I know what happened to your mom. Bring the lair and you'll know 2."

Spoiler alert: Toby’s mom has been dead for some time — or so we think. Before he embarks on his quest to find her, we see a young Toby in his room with Alison. She is fiddling around with some of his model cars, teasing him about his toys, and like a young Seth Cohen, he tells her “they aren’t to play with!”

As he comes over to stop her, she says, “I know you want to kiss me...” but as he leans i nervously to do it, they’re interrupted by his mom, Marion Cavanaugh! (This interaction was foreshadowed in another flashback where Ali tells Toby, “I bet you wish you could have kissed me when you had the chance.”) Mama C doesn’t seem to be doing well, and he confronts her about something going on. She claims she’s fine and goes to make them a snack, and then the Ali-Toby drama goes down.

"Did she just wake up?" Alison questions. "I think there's something wrong with her," he replies, to which Alison quips, “Lazy, much?" On that note, he immediately asks her to leave, she screams, “Loser!” and walks out in a huff, slamming the door.

We don’t see any interactions past that — just Toby leaving the RV and walking down a dirt path, seemingly crying, in search of “A,” who knows how Marion died. We have a feeling that more information is around the corner, especially since Marlene said it was the beginning of a “surprising and emotional” for Toby in the first half of the season.
