Pretty Little Liars Season 4 is reportedly the “season of answers.” So, how about the answer to one of the most psychologically intriguing (and possibly vital) questions of the series: Why does Alison (Sasha Pieterse) have so many issues?

It’s no secret the Liars’ dead best friend was a bit off her rocker. It’s one of the reasons it makes her murder so difficult to solve. Ali herself was one big question mark whose hobbies included emotional manipulation and adopting alternate personas — sometimes at the same time. It’s hard to find a killer when you can’t fully figure out the victim. At the PLL Paley Center panel last night (June 10), executive producer Oliver Goldstick said, “[Ali] is a very damaged person.” Will we find out what made her this way in Season 4?

It sounds like it! PLL writer Bryan Holdman tweeted “It will be fun finding out!” implying that we will, in fact, be finding out — hopefully, starting in tonight’s Season 4 premiere. We know we are getting a Toby-centric flashback that shows Toby and Ali a friends. Will Ali share something with Toby that she didn’t share with the Liars? Will Mrs. DiLaurentis’s return to Rosewood lead to a dark discovery about Ali’s past? We hope so.

Why do you think Ali is so messed up? How do you think the Liars will uncover the truth about her past? Let us know in the comments below!

Pretty Little Liars Season 4 premieres tonight, Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC Family.
