We’ve heard mostly positive things about the status of Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and Toby’s (Keegan Allen) relationship in Season 4, but Marlene King’s TV Guide interview gives us pause. What did the Pretty Little Liars showrunner have to say about Spoby trust issues?

The trust becomes an issue right away and it is hard to pretend like nothing happened,” said Marlene. “In the premiere, we find out ‘A’ isn't done with Toby and ‘A’ is going to give something to Toby if he delivers something in return. It really does open up a can of worms for Spencer and Toby and they're going to have to see if they can survive it.”

What do you mean “if”? After last season’s shenanigans, we thought Spoby could survive anything else “A” throws at them, but apparently maybe not. Could this be what Spence is so “conflicted” about? We know Toby is in for a rough ride in Season 4, with emotional secrets about his past coming to light and that Spence is going to be there for him. We just hope “A” doesn’t get in the way of that. It sounds like she has something to hold over Toby’s head and, if we learned anything about Toby in Season 3, it’s that he is willing to do whatever he has to do to keep the people he loves safe (even if they’re not happy).

Do you think Spoby’s trust issues will tear them apart? Let us know in the comments below!
