The Season 4 premiere of Pretty Little Liars introduced “The Lady in Black,” a black-veiled woman who attended Wilden’s funeral. The mystery woman later removed her veil only to reveal a burnt mask underneath, suggesting that she was involved with the fire at the Thornhill Lodge in the Season 3 finale. Who is The Lady in Black? We speculate below.
Ali or Ali’s Twin
It would be kind of crazy to wear a mask of your own face over your face, but we’ve seen weirder things happen in Rosewood (and we bet it fits great!). It didn’t look like the person who pulled the girls out of the Thornhill Lodge fire was wearing an Ali mask. It looked like a real-faced Ali, which leads us to believe it was either Ali or someone who looks just like her (i.e. her twin). That doesn’t mean she didn’t bring her Ali mask along, though, causing it to get burnt. Could The Lady in Black and Red Coat be the same person? We think so, and we think that person could be Ali/Ali’s twin.
We really don’t want to believe that Paige (Lindsey Shaw) has anything to do with this business, mostly because poor Emily has had the worst luck ever when it comes to her love life — and that’s even comparing her to Spencer, who thought her boyfriend betrayed her and then died. But, on the other hand, that could have easily been Paige under the veil. We know she has a troubled past with Ali, and the girls have suspected her before. She also spends quite a bit of time off-screen. She could be up to anything (like setting fire to the Thornhill Lodge). Is Emily’s lady love the Lady in Black? We have to at least float the possibility.
Spencer doesn’t seem ready to admit her sister is capable of “A” behavior, but all signs point to Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) being an evil mastermind. Not only does she have a history of dressing up in black and tricking the Liars (i.e. her turn as the Black Swan), but Mona told the girls that both Jenna and Shana are afraid of Melissa, which makes us think Melissa is capable of a great deal. Spencer was the only Liar not in the Thornhill Lodge when it was set ablaze and the “A” Team has been adamant about getting Spencer on the team, which also points to Melissa. As evil as Melissa may be, we think she still loves her sister.
If Ali didn’t learn her tricks from he twisted mother, she could have learned them from Cece (Vanessa Ray). The Liars first noticed Cece because she sounded exactly like their dead friend. She looks a bit like her, too, which could account for the Liars’ hazy sightings of Ali. Cece also seemed to have some sort of issue with Wilden, who was seen manhandling her into his police car. Cece claimed that she was skipping town in Season 3, but could she have stayed around to enact vengeance on the Liars and Wilden? Perhaps...
