We love all of Pretty Little Liars’ constant thrills and surprises, but at the end of every episode, it always seems as though we have more questions than answers, which was especially true after this week’s premiere.
To that end, we’ve tackled the 10 biggest questions from this week’s episode in order to figure out what’s really going on in Rosewood and to pick up on any and all clues.
Here are 10 questions from Season 4, Episode 1: “‘A’ Is for A-l-i-v-e.”
1. Who killed Wilden?
Given the shoddy police force in Rosewood, which hasn’t solved Garrett or Ian’s murders, you can bet Wilden’s will be unsolved for quite a bit. (Seriously, what do those cops do all day?) Still, Wilden as Queen of Hearts is surprising — although we knew he was up to something since he was the “Beach Hottie.” So who killed him? Our bet is Melissa or CeCe, but you never know.
2. So Red Coat was wearing an Ali mask in the Season 3 finale?
As if PLL hadn’t already found enough ways to cover up someone’s face, this week employed a black veil, which itself was covering an Ali mask. Oy. The Ali mask — which seems to have been burned — means the veil wearer was probably Red Coat, and so Hanna might have just seen a mask and thought it was Ali in the Season 3 finale. In other words: Hanna sucks at face recognition.
3. Is Melissa really the Queen of Hearts?
Spencer is holding out hope that Melissa isn’t really evil — best of luck with that, Spence! — but Melissa is indeed a Queen of Hearts, according to Mona. Granted, we never see Melissa’s face in the vid, so we can’t verify this, but given Melissa and Wilden’s previous connection — back to their youth spent at Cape May — we’re not surprised they were working together.
4. Does the pig provide clues about “A”?
Our first reaction to seeing the pig in the trunk was a big ol’, “That’s it?” But instead of us getting whiny (or is it “swine-y”?), we’ll admit the pig could have some significance. Sure, a dead “pig” implies a dead police officer — i.e. Wilden — but is there also a connection to Paige, aka Pigskin? And let’s not forget those pig cupcakes Hefty Hanna once had to eat. This is a very pro-pork show.
5. What’s Jenna’s deal?
This show hates a nice, obvious clue — even if we’d like it to deliver one every now and then — so we’re guessing Jenna’s burn on her hand is a red herring and that she didn’t start the fire. In fact, PLL loves introducing wounds and then never explaining them (Jason’s wound last season, anyone?), so don’t hold your breath. But what was Jenna trying to tell Emily about hurting Toby?
6. Assuming Mona is good (we hope!), who is deleting her files?
Whenever something gets deleted from a computer, our first suspect is Caleb, as he’s a pro at this. So was it Caleb who was deleting the video of Melissa and Wilden in Queen of Hearts costumes from Mona’s computer? Or might it be someone else, like Melissa herself — or maybe the computer-savvy Lucas? Long story short: We want to trust Mona, but we’re just not sure.
7. Why the heck was Ezra at the funeral?
Apparently, Ezra really loves funerals, considering he was previously at Ali’s and now brings Maggie to Wilden’s, even though he didn’t really appear to know either of those two people. Sure, we get that Ezra might just be there to show his support, but we’re wondering if there’s a more nefarious reason for him to attend.
8. Did Ali do something to Toby’s mom?
Being a former “A” team member doesn’t make you safe from torture, as Toby learned when he got those threatening messages about his mom. But who would know things about his mom? From the looks of that flashback, Ali just might have played a role in her getting sick. Side note: How cute was the adorkable little Toby during that Talison scene? So pinchable!
9. Who was spying on Spoby at the lodge remains?
On a show like this, items never stay where you last saw them — which is why Toby should have known that the red coat he spotted in the ashes of the fire wouldn’t be there for long. We’re now wondering if this means it was indeed Red Coat who started the fire — and we wonder who was spying on Spoby in the lodge wreckage. A note to “A”: Spoby has been through enough!
10. Why has Mrs. DiLaurentis returned, causing more trouble than ever?
We haven’t seen Ali’s mom since Season 2, so it’s odd for Mrs. DiLaurentis to pop back up in Rosewood again. It’s even more odd for her to stare endlessly at Spencer from her home, as if they were reenacting a scene from Rear Window. So is Hanna right about Mrs. D knowing something about Ali (or Ali’s twin) still being alive?
