The Liars have been on the quest to unmask “A” (or now “Red Coat”) for three seasons, and in the Pretty Little Liars Season 4 premiere, we got one step closer.

Though we didn’t see who was underneath it, at the end of Episode 1: “A is for A-l-i-v-e,” someone was wearing an Ali mask that was burned across half of the face, suggesting that she pulled the girls out of the fire at the end of Season 3.

Even creepier than wearing a mask of someone’s face is that this person’s lair (presumably “A”) is surrounded by photos of Alison. Yes, this was part of the regular lair, but it seemed more intense than usual — and eerily similar to Jessica DiLaurentis’s “shrine” to Ali in her house.

As soon as Alison’s mom came back to town, she moved all of Alison’s things back into the house and had a shrine of photos and memorabilia of her dearly departed daughter. Sure, she misses Ali, but this is more than a little creepy. Her sudden return already had us suspicious, and since we didn’t see her at Detective Wilden’s funeral, there’s a good chance she could have been hiding under that lacy black veil.

We’re not confirming that Mrs. DiLaurentis is “The Lady in Black,” but she is at the very least on the “A” team, perhaps even running the show. Is she avenging her daughter’s death? Secretly hiding that Alison is alive somewhere? There are endless possibilities. While executive producer Oliver Goldstick has said they aren’t going with the “Ali has a twin” storyline, he didn’t rule out a plot twist of Mrs. D rockin’ a red coat.
