At the end of the Twisted series premiere, viewers were left with an uneasy feeling: Did Danny Desai (Avan Jogia) actually murder Regina? If he didn’t, then how did he end up with Regina’s necklace? And more importantly, why did he lie to Jo (Madelaine Hasson) about it? He obviously knows something.
If you’re like us, then you probably have a lot of questions going into Season 1, Episode 2 (“Grief is a Five Letter Word”), but don’t worry, Twisted fans. Wetpaint Entertainment has the exclusive scoop from showrunner Adam Milch! Can we trust Danny? What’s the importance of the necklace? Will we ever meet Aunt Terra? Find out answers to these burning questions and more in our interview below.
Wetpaint Entertainment: Shocker! Danny has the necklace, and now I don’t know what to believe.
Adam Milch: Good! We are going to explore that. There are going to be moments where Danny has to prove himself, and we’re never going to be sure if he’s telling the truth or not. Eventually, we’re going to have to answer some of these questions, but there are a lot of moments where Danny is justifying things, and you have to ask yourself, “Is he genuine? Is he telling the truth? Is he being real? That’s such an on-going tension for the show.
What’s the importance of the necklace? We know it belonged to Aunt Tera, and then Regina had it.
I think the necklace is an important link between our two big mysteries, what happened to Regina and what happened with his aunt. I think how Regina got the necklace and who gave it to her is going to be a very important mystery. And I think it does have a very important emotional meaning for Danny. It connects back to his family, but there’s more to it than that. How the necklace moved around from different people is crucial to understanding this mystery. And a big part of this cycle is who knows about the necklace and how that affects their feelings about Danny. It’s not going to sit in Danny’s possession in every episode. Things are going to happen with it.
We know Danny is the obvious suspect, but it could be anyone. Is everyone a suspect in this town?
It could be Danny, but I think there are a lot of suspects. We’re going to explore a lot of people’s backstories. We’re going to explore Karen. What does she know? We’re going to explore those moments that’s she’s letting on. We’re also going to look into what happened to Danny’s dad Vikram. That’s a big mystery for the show. Everyone that you met in the pilot is a suspect.
In terms of storytelling, is Regina’s death and the mystery surrounding it going to be the focus of Season 1?
Yeah, I think Regina’s death is a big part of the first season, absolutely.
Is this a show that’s going to rely heavily on flashbacks? Because there’s a lot of pieces that need to be put together.
We are going to do flashbacks. We’re being careful not to rely too much on them. Something has happened in the past, and that’s key to what’s going on in the present, so I think we have to explore through flashbacks occasionally. We have to meet Vikram [Danny’s dad]. I think eventually we’ll have to meet Terra. People have to see Regina again. I think she was fantastic, and I think we have to know more about her.
Of course, we have to meet his aunt and explore her character a bit to find out why he had to kill her.
I don’t know if that will be in the first cycle or not, but we’ll have to flashback to her at some point and learn more about this person.
Tell me what’s coming up in the first cycle. Regina has been murdered, and now we’re on the hunt for her killer.
In the first 12 episodes, we really want to explore Jo’s decision to trust Danny in the beginning. Where will that take her by the end? That relationship is certainly going to be tested. Obviously, we want to explore Lacey and Jo’s friendship, and we want to see Danny attempt to fit in and where that goes wrong. It’s not going to work out well for him. I think he’s going to have to deal with some difficult, stressful situations that will test his character and test who he really is. He’ll be forced to make some tough choices. Some things are going to happen, beyond the Regina murder, that will really force us to wonder if he is perhaps a more menacing character than we think.
Will there be more murder?
I’m not going to say that, but let’s just say other illegal things happen, and Danny will get caught in the crosshairs. Whether or not Danny is responsible will be an open question, and that’s definitely going to cause some problems for him.
Are we going to see more of Drunk Jo? Because that was hilarious.
It was fun. We will see Drunk Rico at some point, which may be even more hilarious. And other characters will be intoxicated in some ways. Maybe we’ll even see more of Drunk Jo.
Drunk Karen is probably the best, though.
Karen drinks a lot of wine. She’s like a Real Housewife. Every time we’re at a table read, and there’s a line about Karen taking a sip of wine, I get a look from Denise Richards. It has become an ongoing joke that Karen tends to always have a glass of wine. She’s going through a lot! I think she needs a glass or two or wine every once in awhile. I can empathize with that.
