Pretty Little Liars is action-packed with drama, thrills, and twisted plot lines, but there’s one thing that people fail to mention when talking about the show: all the awkward moments.
Think back through PLL’s four seasons — a lot of uncomfortable things have happened. For example, finding out you made out with your English teacher (and by the way, that “college girl” is only 16), discovering your boyfriend is “A,” or realizing your mom hit a detective, who was hot on your trail, with her car. Those are just a handful of the uncomfortable moments our Liars have had to endure.
Basically, Rosewood is one awkward town, and to honor that (or at least call the Liars out on their weird moments), we’re compiling all of ‘em, one episode at a time. On last night’s episode (Season 4, Episode 4: “Face Time”), we saw a situation so uncomfortable unfold that we nearly had to look away from the screen. As Aria and her new beau Jake were trying to enjoy a nice date, they were interrupted... by Malcolm, aka Ezra’s illegitimate child.
It’s weird enough to be stopped by a kid for a chat in the middle of a date, but then Malcolm brought his dad up in the conversation, exclaiming, “Mom and Ezra are inside!” Though there was a brief cute interaction with Malcolm and Jake about books, that all went to hell when the little guy asked, “Why don’t you come over anymore?” Aria’s response? “Well, sometimes people get busy, they can’t always do what they wanna do.” Uh, yeah.
It got really awkward after Malcolm scurried off, though. “Nice kid,” Jake said, and Aria brushed it off with a monotone, “Yeah.” He then asked, “Who is Ezra? Friend of the family?” to which she quickly replied to with a lie: “No, just one of my teachers.” Oh, just one of my teachers that I dated, lost my virginity to, and broke up with because he is hanging out with his baby mama. No big deal.
However, this wasn’t even the most uncomfortable moment of the episode. Later, she came clean to Jake, and his response was, “I knew you were interesting, I just didn’t know how interesting,” and then, “You know you’re not finished with him, don’t you?” Eek. The cherry on top of the awkward sundae? She tries to kiss him, and he immediately stops her, questioning, “Do you really want to be with someone who would kiss you after a story like that?”
Oy. We’ll see if these two stand the test of time, but for now, they at least win the award for the most awkward interaction ever... at least until next week!
