Pretty Little Liars showrunner Marlene King probably knows the PLL characters better than anyone. She knows details of their backstories that may never reach the screen and she knows details of their futures that we can only speculate about. So, when she describes her characters, we listen. How did she describe Toby Cavanaugh (Keegan Allen)?

“[Toby] is truth,” Marlene tweeted, when asked by fan what she most likes about Toby’s character. In a show about Liars, that may be the highest compliment one can get (and exceedingly rare). It seems the Tobester is more than just Pretty Eyes.

It is especially poetic to describe Toby as “truth” considering he was in such doubt by both Spencer and the fans last season. That theme has continued in Season 4 as he and Spencer have to keep the truth about why Toby gave the mobile home to “A” from the other Liars.

We also wonder if Marlene’s description tells us anything at all about Toby’s role in future episodes. Does he know something about Ali’s death or “A” that he hasn’t told the Liars? Is he the keeper of a truth that, for some reason, he is unwilling to tell? The recent reveal that Toby was friends with Alison before they grew to despise one another makes us wonder more about Toby’s role in the “A” plot. We’re not saying he is working against the Liars, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know more than he’s telling Spencer. After all, he’s kept secrets before.

What do you think Marlene’s description means? Do you think Toby has more to share about Alison’s life and death? Share your theories in the comments below!
