We love all of Pretty Little Liars’ constant thrills and surprises, but at the end of every episode, it always seems as though we have more questions than answers — and that was especially true after the most recent episode. To that end, we’ve tackled the biggest questions from this week’s episode in order to figure out what’s really going on in Rosewood, and to pick up on any and all clues.
Here are 10 questions from Season 4, Episode 9: “Into the Deep”!
1. What does Jenna know about Ali’s death?
It’s gotta be juicy, right? Because someone apparently tried to kill Jenna to keep her quiet. Sparia collectively assumed that it had to do with Ali being alive, but Shana balked at the prospect when Spence mentioned it to her at the hospital. If not a fake death, then what might Jenna know? She should probably tell us before someone tries to kill her again.
2. Is this the beginning of the end for Paily?
We can’t have been the only ones teary-eyed watching Emily and Paige realistically face the fact that they will probably be apart for at least four years, and that might mean the end of their relationship. Em’s faux sleep move at the end of the episode makes us particularly worried. Is Emily already pulling away from her lady love?
3. Where did Pastor Ted get $100,000?
We’re not sure what the average salary is for pastors these days, but we doubt most men of the cloth have $100,000 lying around. When Ted came up with the money to post Ashley’s bail, we were touched...but also a little suspicious. Could there be something untoward behind Ted’s accumulation of wealth, or is he just a badass couponer?
4. Whose house was Red Coat breaking into?
What was Red Coat doing breaking into that house at the end of the episode? And whose house is it? For someone badass enough to have access to her own plane, it was strange to see Red Coat involved in something as petty as breaking-and-entering. Then again, not everyone can have a whole team of minions.
5. Whose P.O. box is Toby chasing?
We learned from Spencer’s exposition that Toby found the apartment of the person (a girl, specifically) Nigel Wright has been calling, but it had long since been abandoned. The trail doesn’t end there, however. There is a forwarding address in Philadelphia. Who does it belong to? We know Melissa is very familiar with Philly...
6. Who tried to kill Jenna?
Pretty much everyone and their mother was at Emily’s birthday party. Was it one of Em’s party guests who knocked Jenna out and left her to drown or someone who wasn’t invited to the party? And who were they working for? Cece? “A”? Red Coat? All of the above?
7. Are Jenna and Shana more than friends?
Try as we might, we can’t get a solid read on the relationship between Jenna and Shana. We think they might be a couple, but they could just be really close friends. There are more pressing matters to discuss on this show, but we’re really curious what the deal is with these two.
8. Why is “A” sending Toby sheet music?
We appreciated “A”’s tickling the old ivories at the end there, but why is she sending Toby sheet music to the song “Any Time”? Is it some kind of “A” Team code that he will understand? Does it have something to do with his mother? And why does “A” have such a good time picking on Toby?
9. Does Mona want to be in Radley?
Mona seemed pretty excited to be back in her old room in Radley. Does she have a reason for wanting to be there, or does she just miss her old bed? Radley seems to be at the center of the Rosewood mystery, so we wouldn’t be surprised if Mona’s “visit” to Radley is more business than pleasure.
10. Is it physically possible for Caleb to be a bad boyfriend?
Seriously, this kid isn’t even in the episode and he still manages to come off as the best boyfriend ever. His move this week? Planning to sell his car to put money towards the Ashley Marin Bail Fund. Caleb has to come back from Ravenswood — because there’s no way anyone can ever live up to his run as Hanna’s boyfriend.
