With the summer season of Pretty Little Liars drawing to a close, we’re inching ever-closer to the promised answer of “Who killed Detective Wilden?” But that hasn’t kept us from speculating. And accusing! Here’s five reasons we think Melissa Hastings (Torrey DeVitto) totally off-ed Wilden.

She was protecting her sister.

According to Melissa, Wilden was the one who set the Thornhill Lodge on fire, almost baking Hanna, Aria, Emily, and Mona to a crisp. Spencer was nearby and easily could have been trapped in the fire, as well. Add this major transgression to the fact that Wilden had been harassing the Liars since Day One. Was Melissa trying to protect her little sister by killing the crooked cop?

She was “terrified” of Wilden.

Melissa claims Wilden was blackmailing her, Shana, and Jenna and that they were “terrified” of what he might do to them. We can’t really imagine Melissa being terrified of anyone, but she did look pretty freaked out when she was smashing those masks of her face. Melissa is not the type to surrender control easily. Did she finally have enough of Wilden bossing her around and decide to eliminate him once and for all?

She took the photo of Wilden, Ali, and Cece on Cape May.

Remember that photo that Emily and Jason almost died trying to retrieve? It was of Wilden, Ali, and Cece on a boat on Cape May -- and Cece claims Melissa was the one who took it. The Liars wanted the pic as prove that Wilden got Ali pregnant that summer. We now know Ali wasn’t actually present, but that photo still seemed important to “A.” Does Melissa know the truth of that summer (i.e. the truth behind Ali’s death)? Did she kill Wilden to keep him quiet?

She lied to the police about knowing Wilden after high school.

After Wilden’s death, Melissa is questioned by the police. She tells them that she didn’t talk to Wilden post-high school. We know from the Cape May photo (as well as the blackmailing) that this isn’t true. We can’t blame Melissa for not wanting the police to know Wilden was blackmailing her (a motive for murder), but why wouldn’t she fess up about that summer in Cape May? That sort of thing has to come out eventually, right?

She didn’t deny it.

Then, there’s the icing on the the Melissa Probably Killed Wilden Cake: when asked by Spencer if she killed Wilden, Melissa didn’t deny it. Then, she skipped town. Maybe she’s just looking to maintain her mysterious air, but murder is the sort of thing you make absolutely clear you weren’t involved in. Melissa’s hesitation to do so is as good as a confession.
