These boots were made for stalking! In this week’s Pretty Little Liars recap (Season 4, Episode 11: "Bring Down the Hoe"), Hanna makes a new friend; Toby steals our hearts (figuratively) and a car (literally); and CeCe pops by to say hey hay.
Wherein Spencer Tries to Find a Needle Stalker in a Haystack
We're getting a little worried that this whole Toby's mom storyline will turn out to be pointless — not unlike, say, Caleb's dad and the not-so-riveting Great Church Bell Mystery of last season — but we were still quite moved by hearing his mom's CD. So we can understand why Toby tried to steal that car, even though it was so obvious he would get caught.
Speaking of things that are obvious, how did Spencer and Emily not think to look for Red Coat, oh, right next to the hay truck, instead of inside the haystack? Clearly, Red Coat bailed while they weren't looking. (Get it — bailed"? As in a hay bale?) And by the way, we think we just invented a new Ryan Gosling-esque meme: “Hay, Girl.”
Wherein Hanna Gets a Brand New Benefactor
Let’s get this straight: So Hanna was being followed by a very easy-on-the-eyes fella named Travis, who gives her a wad of cash, and then tells the police that Hanna’s mom couldn’t have killed Wilden? Sounds like a win-win-win to us! We’re still not sure if Travis can be trusted, but we’re thrilled that Ashley will finally be out of the Gray Bar Hotel, since orange is so not her color. So who did Travis see running from the murder scene?
Granted, things between Hanna and Caleb seem to be heading south (sob!), but we did get another cute Taleb moment — gotta love Toby and Caleb bro-ing out! — which is always a plus.
Wherein Aria and Jake Put Their Best Foot Forward
Sure, a lot happened involving Aria this week, but all we can think about is one thing: Aria has some serious dance moves! She and Jake never looked better than they did on the barn-dance floor, with Aria rockin’ those new boots. But we must point out: Did anyone else get the sense — while Jake was gleefully putting on Aria’s boots — that Jake just might have a foot fetish? He was a little too into her feet — we’re just sayin’.
And as much as we like Jake, was there ever any doubt that Ezria would reunite, especially now that Ez is no longer a sexy single dad? Of course, Ezra appears to have new problems, as CeCe was spying on him and Aria outside his apartment. Does this mean she’s Red Coat? But why is she in Rosewood when she said earlier in the episode that she wouldn’t go back there?
Wherein Emily Needs to Stop Talking About Mushy Squash
So there’s no problem that a little line-dancing can’t fix? That appears to the motto of this week’s episode, as Paige and Emily put their tension behind them — caused in part by Zoe’s extra-glowing recommendation letter for Emily — when they just shut up and dance. This is the cutest Paily moment we've seen in a while! Billy Ray Cyrus would be proud of them, y’all.
Also intriguing was that flashback between Em and Alison, as Ali admits her favorite hobby is helping couples break up. In other words, if there’s dirty work to be done, Ali will do it, no questions asked. But which guy pulled a gun on her — was it indeed Wilden when she tried to break up him and CeCe, or might it have been someone else? And if we never hear the words “mushy squash” again, it’ll be too soon.
— We’re not really sure what to make of this episode, since we have our doubts that CeCe is actually Red Coat, even though we see her spying at Ezra’s apartment. It would be a bit too obvious to make her Red Coat, right? So maybe she's just on the "A" team, and someone else is Red Coat, like Melissa? After all, we see that Red Coat has dark hair in the drawing that Wren does.
— The other big question: Did CeCe kill Wilden? Travis’s story about seeing a girl who may or not have been blonde fleeing the woods after that gunshot suggests he saw CeCe — but maybe he saw Ali or Ali’s twin. Then again, maybe Travis is just being paid off by “A” to throw the police off the trail. Rosewood's police are not hard to get off the trail.
— We see CeCe in a room filled with photos and newspaper clippings while chatting on the phone to a mystery person. We don’t know who CeCe is talking to, but we're thinking Melissa or Wren are possibilities. And why does CeCe say she isn’t coming back to Rosewood, considering that we then see her in Rosewood later in the episode? Perhaps CeCe is the one with a twin. C’mon — don’t you sometimes wish that everyone on this show had a secret twin?
— After the Liars are in the crawlspace and hear someone walking in Ali’s house above them, they refer to the person as “heavy-footed.” We don’t think CeCe would qualify as “heavy-footed,” so maybe this means a guy was up there — like perhaps Wren or Noel?
— In the final scene, we see “A” knitting dolls of the girls, including Mona, who is wearing a hoodie. Does this confirm Mona is back to working with “A”? And we can’t help but realize that “A” is good at knitting, just as Ali’s mom was when she was knitting that scarf recently. Coincidence?
Other Things That Need to Be Discussed:
— It’s often a tough call to choose Aria’s most ridiculous outfit, but this week was no contest: That tiger dress she was wearing in the beginning of the episode definitely takes the cake! In fact, the only reason that dress would be acceptable is if Aria were Katy Perry and she were about to sing her new song “Roar.” The eye of the tiger, indeed.
