Pretty Little Liars is notorious for drama, thrills, and twisted plot lines in action-packed episodes, but there’s one thing that people fail to mention when talking about the show: all the awkward moments.
In PLL’s four seasons, there have been a lot of uncomfortable scenes, including finding out the girl you just made out with is your student, discovering your boyfriend is “A,” or watching your mom hit a now-dead detective with her car.
Basically, Rosewood is one awkward town, and to honor that (or at least call the Liars out on their weird moments), we’re compiling all of ‘em, one episode at a time. On last night’s episode (Season 4, Episode 11: "Bring Down the Hoe"), there were quite a few cringe-worthy scenes, but one snafu took the cake.
It’s no secret that Ezria is on the rocks. Since breaking up, Aria has moved on to karate hottie Jake and straight up ignored Ezra. He’s tried to call her — which was last week’s awkward moment, in which he cried and stared at his reflection alone — and she has been pushing him aside so that Jake doesn’t get upset. (He is definitely in-the-know about Ezria’s history.) But there’s only so long that they can avoid each other in a small town like Rosewood, and as predicted, their first run-in was super awk.
Aria was ready for a date at The Brew with Jake, sitting casually at the counter, when she and Ezra lock eyes. Notably, he is growing a beard (which Emily noticed earlier in the ep, causing him to snap back angrily) and looked a bit haggard, only adding to the strangeness of the situation. When he comes over, you can feel the tension, and then he announces, “Well, at least I know you didn’t lose it… or throw it in the river,” referencing her clearly-visible cell phone. She goes on to babble an explanation about how busy she’s been. He seems happy that she’s “here now” to talk, but she dismisses it over and over, even when he asks if there’s another time he can tell her something “pretty important.”
Then Jake walks in and all is lost. She tries to explain why Ezra is there, awkwardly introduces them, and they shake hands. Ezra claims he has to go, skedaddles, and then Jake seductively puts cowboy boots on Aria. In public. It was a lot to handle. Not to mention that later in the episode, Jake confronts Ezra at the hoedown dance (whilst wearing a huge cowboy hat) and makes things uncomfortable all over again. However, Ezria fans got a moment when Aria goes to his apartment at the tail end of the ep and they have a big ol’ feelings chat. She holds his hand, says, “I’m not leaving, Ezra,” and we just don’t know what to think.
