On Tuesday, Pretty Little Liars will air its cliffhanger- and twist-filled Season 4 summer finale. We’ll learn about Red Coat’s identity. We’ll learn more about the “A” team. And Toby (Keegan Allen) will learn some shocking new things about his mother’s death.
All season Toby has been searching for answers about his mom’s apparent suicide many years ago. Toby’s convinced that Marion Cavanaugh didn’t actually kill herself, and he’s even been reluctantly working with “A” to help further his search for the truth.
Wetpaint Entertainment recently spoke exclusively with Keegan about what to expect in the big summer finale. So will the great mystery of Toby’s mother finally be solved? Yes. Well... sorta. At least a little.
“It will make more sense, yes, kind of,” he tells us. For the most part, though, fans will have to wait until January 2014 for things to really start making sense. “There's a lot more information that comes with the next half of the season.”
Things have been rough for Toby this season, but Keegan promises that it won’t stay that way forever. “It’s really funny. I made a reel of all the scenes that have aired so far, and I realized this season, I mean Toby is tortured. He's tortured by the past, just completely guilty. You see it in every way. He is just a shadow because he's dealing with all of this. So he's miserable in this season, and it gets to a point where it plateaus for the second half of season four.”
Hmm. We’d prefer it if Toby’s life actually started looking up for once. But a plateau is better than another total nosedive, so we’ll take it.
“We'll find out where that goes,” Keegan continues. “It's a great kind of crescendo, that I've been fortunate enough to play out, and everybody will be shocked. It's pretty shocking stuff.”
Obviously, “A” knows a lot about Toby’s mom. We have to wonder: Will some of the shock have to do with how much she was involved with the “A”-Ali-Red Coat mystery?
“Everything connects within the show,” Keegan says. “I mean, when you hear something as small and benign as a certain plot point, it ties in later in a great large and profound way. So yeah, I think it's safe to say that a lot of this all intersects with something. It runs parallel as well.”
