We love all of Pretty Little Liars’ constant thrills and surprises, but at the end of every episode, it always seems as though we have more questions than answers — and that was especially true after this week’s insane summer finale.
To that end, we’ve tackled the biggest questions from this week’s episode in order to figure out what’s really going on in Rosewood, and to pick up on any and all clues.
Here are 10 questions from Season 4, Episode 12: “Now You See Me, Now You Don’t.”
1. Is Ezra “A” — or is this another Toby situation?
Before we get too freaked out about Ezra being “A,” it’s worth remembering that we were all feeling these same things after Season 3’s summer finale, when Toby was revealed to be “A.” And we all know how that turned out. So perhaps Ezra is just in the lair because, uh, he’s trying to help Aria. After all, he wasn’t wearing a hoodie or black gloves — not to mention that this tweet has us wondering. But the show couldn’t trick us like this again, right?
2. The evidence does point overwhelmingly to Ezra being “A,” doesn’t it?
When you think about it, there have been more than a few clues to suggest Ezra would be “A.” A few examples: He was randomly on the ghost train; in “unmAsked,” he and Aria are the only ones to take off their masks; Ezra had that sock-drawer cash after Jason offered the reward; Ezra was at Ali’s funeral; we see “A” buy the same kind of whiskey Ezra gave Byron; Ezra uses a typewriter, as does “A”; “A” got rid of Jackie and Noel; Marlene says “A” gets revealed in 3B, which is Ezra’s apartment number; his blackboard in Season 1 says “But I was A.” Just sayin’...
3. Where did CeCe go?
CeCe appears to still be alive once she wiggles those fingers, although we can’t believe not one of the Liars thought to keep an eye on her. So where did she take off to? And are she and Ali working together as the two Red Coats, or is she on the “A” team? We must say, it’s a little hard to imagine her helping the Liars, since she’s hasn’t seemed to be their biggest fan.
4. If Ali is alive, then whose body was found?
Ms. Grunwald basically confirms that Ali is indeed alive, but we’ll probably have to wait until the next new episode to find out for sure if she’s still with us. So then whose body did the police find, thinking it was Ali’s? Perhaps this is a sign that the show is going with Ali having a twin, and so it was the twin’s body who was found.
5. Was Ali watching the Liars through the hole in the wall at A’s lair?
It appears that the Liars were being watched from A’s lair — uh, aren’t they always being watched? — as we can see a poster on the wall with an eye on it that someone is clearly watching from. Is this Ali’s eye? It seems that way, especially given this Instagram post from Sasha Pieterse.
6. What did Hanna swipe from A’s lair?
We see Hanna harken back to her shoplifting days as she pilfers a little book while they’re in the lair. So what exactly did she take? We’re assuming it’s one of Ali’s diaries, but it’s also possible that it’s a playbook in which Ezra gives details about what’s still to come. Either way, we’re surprised, since Hanna is never one to enjoy doing extra reading of any kind.
7. Does Mona’s penchant for knitting mean she’s still on the “A” team?
When Toby follows Shana to the bed-and-breakfast where she talks to Mona, we can see Mona doing some knitting. Given that “A” was knitting a tiny sweater last week and has been stabbing knitting needles into those holes at Ali’s place, we’re wondering if Mona is indeed back with the “A” team. But why would the “A” team want her to confess to killing Wilden?
8. Does the photo of Ali, CeCe, and Wilden being in the lair mean Ezra tried to kill Jason?
Jason managed to survive the Elevator of Death last season, but the photo of Ali, CeCe and Wilden wasn’t so lucky, as it disappeared in the elevator incident. But then we see the same photo on the wall in A’s lair — so how did it get there, and does this mean Ezra tried to kill Jason? Maybe he wasn’t too pleased about that Jason-Aria kiss from Season 2 after all.
9. Could Aria really be on the “A” team after all?
The fact that Ezra is possibly “A” brings up a million questions about their relationship. Like, did Ezra ever really have feelings for Aria, or has he been using her this entire time to get close to Ali? And was their meeting in the bar during the pilot episode just his way of getting close to the Liars? Then again, there have always been theories about Aria being “A,” so maybe she and Ezra are in this together. It is odd that Aria’s Magic-8 Ball just had the letter “A” in it...
10. It looks like that “A” mug in Ezra’s apartment last week was a pretty big clue after all, right?
Last week, we pointed out that there was a mug with the letter “A” on it in the background of Ezra’s apartment. At the time, we figured this was just one of a million possible clues the show has given us, but now it really appears to have been a legit sign. Unless, y’know, Ezra isn’t actually “A.” In fact, that sound you just heard was our brains spontaneously combusting from all these mysteries...
