It’s hard to believe, but we’re officially halfway through Season 4 of Pretty Little Liars! The season has been full of all the relationship angst, chilling reveals, and all-out danger we have come to expect from our favorite mystery thriller, but some episodes have stood out above others. Here are top five episode picks of Season 4!

Season 4, Episode 2: “Turn of the Shoe”

Sometimes, it feels like “A” has a lot of empty threats, but that wasn’t the case with the second episode of the fourth season, which raised the stakes in a way that made us fear for the Liars’ lives. In one of the most chilling moments of the season, Mona is nearly choked to death mere feet from the Liars. Then, “A” tries to run Aria and Mona down with a car. Emily saves them, but injures her shoulder in the act, a split second heroic move that changes her entire future. It was a timely reminder of how dangerous “A” can be, and set the tone for the rest of the season. No one not even the Liars is safe.

Season 4, Episode 4: “Face Time”

This episode was worth watching for the climactic conversation between the Hastings sisters alone. When the Liars discover Melissa had masks made at the same shop as Ali, they trick her into returning. Spencer confronts her big sister and Melissa finally gives some answers, claiming that she has been trying to protect Spencer this whole time, that she was one of the Queen of Hearts on the Halloween train, and that Wilden started the Thornhill Lodge Fire. Not only did this episode give us some actual, satisfying answers, but it presented us with new questions (i.e. Did Melissa kill Wilden?) that felt interesting and earned.

Season 4, Episode 5: “Gamma Zeta Die”

This episode had everything: the discovery of a hidden room with a connection to Ali, Hanna’s hysterical attempt to dispose of the Wilden murder weapon, and an entire Game of Thrones joke sequence. What more could you want? In what has perhaps been the darkest season yet, this episode also gave us a much-needed break from the “A” melodrama with Spencer and Emily’s visit to Cicero College. Yes, Spence was there to follow up on an “A” clue, but Emily’s concerns about her future and the class-conscious clash between Spence and Em felt real in a way some “A”-related developments don’t. Also, who doesn’t love an episode that ends with one of the Liars being led away in handcuffs?

Season 4, Episode 9: “Into the Deep”

Though all of the Liars have had interesting storylines in Season 4, we think Emily’s is the one that has really grounded the show. Em’s shoulder injury has forced her to think about what she wants for her future, and has been a very real, dark consequence of “A”’s presence in the Liars’ lives. Em’s story came to a head in this episode. In it, Paige gets her girlfriend a meeting with an Olympic-level swim coach. He tells Emily she may never swim competitively again. Em’s reaction to that reality is heartbreaking, as it also means she may not have a future with Paige. Their conversation on the dock at Em’s surprise birthday party is one of our favorite scenes of the entire season. This episode may have been shocking for Jenna’s near-drowning, but we’ll remember it for Emily’s quiet bravery in facing a future other than the one she has always dreamed.

Season 4, Episode 10: “The Mirror Has Three Faces”

We weren’t expecting to be so moved by Emily’s interaction with Mrs. DiLaurentis. Watching these two share their grief over Ali’s death was affecting in a raw, true way. Sometimes, with all of the “A” craziness, it is easy to forget how much the Liars were affected by Ali’s death, to forget that they lost their best friend. This show succeeds the most when we feel that loss - it gives the hunt for “A” added emotional relevance. This episode was a nice balance between these subtle, character-driven moments, and some chilling, creepy moments (i.e. finding the crawl space in the DiLaurentis basement). Plus, we got another Ali flashback, which are our favorites!
