Just because Ezra (Ian Harding) was revealed as “A” in the Season 4 summer finale of Pretty Little Liars, that doesn’t mean we’re ready to give up on him altogether. There’s no way he can be pure evil... right?

PLL showrunner Marlene King recently told Entertainment Weekly that much of the second half of Season 4 will focus on exploring the question of whether Ezra is good or whether he is the show’s evil mastermind, who Marlene refers to as “Uber ‘A.’”

“We knew coming into this because of the Toby reveal and eventually finding out that Toby was working for the greater good, as we call it, that some fans would latch onto that idea for Ezra, and others will latch onto the idea that he is Uber “A,” and that’s what 4B is about,” Marlene says. “It’s about unraveling that story and giving it more meaning, and eventual closure.”

Basically, it sounds like we just have to wait before we get some real answers about the extent of Ezra’s seeming betrAyal, which totally sucks. However, we are glad to hear that Marlene & Co. fully intend to give the implications of this reveal proper consideration on the show.

For example, if Ezra is “A,” then we could assume that he must have been the one who tried to kill Ali. Though Marlene didn’t give anything away, she did note that — in the pilot — Ezra did go to Ali’s funeral, even though we assumed at the time he had never met the teenager.

But on the other side, she also points out that we don’t necessarily know for sure that Ezra and Ali hooked up, or if he was the one who buried her body. None of that has been confirmed.

In the interview, Marlene also acknowledged the seeming lack of motivation on Ezra’s part as “A” — both when it comes to wanting to hurt Ali and the Liars: “I’ve seen some fans commenting that it just doesn’t make sense, what would be his motivation for this and we agree completely. The fans deserve to know that answer, and we will give it to them in 4B.”
