Pretty Little Liars Season 4 is halfway through, and we’re mostly pleased with what we’ve seen so far. But there have been some episodes that haven’t quite worked — eps that didn’t live up to expectation, falling short of the high bar PLL has set in crafting episodes rich in both mystery and character development. Here are the worst episodes of Season 4 thus far...
Season 4, Episode 1: “‘A’ is For A-L-I-V-E”
This episode wasn’t our least favorite of the season, but it was far from our favorite. It started with the anti-climactic reveal that the something terrible in the trunk of Wilden’s police cruiser was a dead pig. Very poetic, but not really worth a whole hiatus of speculation. The rest of the episode flew by with revelations — Wilden is dead, Mona is Team Liar, and “A” is now targeting Hanna’s mom — but the moments never really came together into a cohesive story. We want more from PLL than a series of plot twists and shocking reveals. We want character development, and this episode was short on that.
Season 4, Episode 6: “Under the Gun”
This was one of the most anticipated episodes of the season, as it gave us our first look at the world of Ravenswood, but, the ep felt oddly disjointed. Spencer and Toby’s field trip to Ravenswood took a long time to pay off (arguably, until the summer finale), and as cool as it was to see Ravenswood, it felt unnecessary in the moment. We wish that PLL had either chosen to commit the entire episode to exploring Ravenswood, or waited until the summer finale to introduce the spooky town.
Season 4, Episode 8: “The Guilty Girl’s Handbook”
Though the eighth episode of the season ended with a bang (Mona confessing to Wilden’s murder), it couldn’t save this episode from the dullness that proceeded. Most of the episode chronicled Hanna’s “memories” of the murder as Mona schooled her in how to confess to a murder she didn’t commit. We’re sure the faux-flashback scenes made for good (and misleading) promos, but they made for a boring episode. Even Spencer’s discovery that the police report covering Toby’s mom death was changed couldn’t save this episode from our “worst of” list.
