Pretty Little Liars sometimes interrupts its non-stop onslaught of OMG moments, to bring us a WTF moment. Though both rely on the element of surprise to blindside the viewer, WTF moments tend to have an air of ridiculousness or weirdness about them to which the only possible response can be “WTF?!” These gloriously ridiculous moments often throw us PLLers for a confused loop, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love them every once in awhile. Here are our top 10 WTF moments in PLL history.
Spencer gets locked in a dressing room with snakes (Season 3, Episode 11: “Single Fright Female”)
“A” has gotten pretty creative with her scare tactics over the years, but locking Spencer into a dressing room with a bunch of snakes was a pretty effective and strange thing to do. Still, you have to give the master villain points for creativity. We didn’t even know we are afraid of this happening until we saw this episode. Now, we have do a thorough check before we go into a dressing room.
Jason’s collection of Aria pictures (Season 2, Episode 9: “Picture This”)
Now that Jason is more-or-less on Team Liar, it’s easy to forget that Spencer and Emily once found an entire shed/dark room of his with pictures of Aria. It was uber creepy, and never really explained. We know Jason had a crush on Aria and everything, but there’s a line.
The kid from the doll shop — and the whole doll shop (Season 2, Episode 24: “If These Dolls Could Talk”)
We’ve learned from PLL that there’s nothing creepier than dolls — except maybe a kid who lives in a doll shop. When the Liars track the dolls “A” sent them back to a nearby doll shop, they stop by to investigate. The owner is less-than-forthcoming, but the creepy kid who apparently lives there gives them some info...and us nightmares.
The zombie (Season 3, Episode 13: “This is a Dark Ride”)
Speaking of nightmares, the baby-face zombie costume that pops up from time to time on PLL is a frequent visitor to ours. The zombie likes to show up for Halloween episode, but we’re pretty sure we would find him scary on any day, at any time. The burlap sack hood and shirt? The sewn on mask? The belt around the neck. WTF?
Ashley Marin is visited by a ghost girl (Season 3, Episode 13: “This is a Dark Ride”)
We’re not sure how we felt about this subplot of the otherwise perfect Season 3 Halloween episode. While Ashley Marin and Pastor Ted as (adorably) handing out Halloween candy at the Marin house, a young blond girl with a head of ringlets and an old-fashioned nightgown materializes out of thin air. Ashley tries to help her call her parents, but the girl only sticks around for so long - disappearing just as mysteriously as she appeared. Needless to say, it was a very bizarre storyline that we’re still waiting to have pay off.
Aria is locked in a box with Garrett’s corpse (Season 3, Episode 13: “This is a Dark Ride”)
Yeah, the Season 3 Halloween special was chock-full of WTF moments, though this one had very little ridiculousness in it and a whole lot of terrified shock. When Aria wakes up after having been drugged on the party train, she finds herself locked in a box. With Garrett’s dead corpse. We totally would have been on board with Aria giving a big “WTF” at this moment. Instead, she goes the more classic route of an all-out scream.
Hector makes a mask of Emily’s face (Season 4, Episode 3: “Cat’s Cradle”)
There was never any question that Hector the mask maker is a strange, strange man with his comments on what famous dead person everyone looks like, but we were seriously weirded out when he asked Emily to sit for a mask mold of her face. Kudos for Ems for taking one for the team.
Ella is attacked by bees (Season 4, Episode 5: “Gamma Zeta Die”)
Perhaps taking inspiration from her earlier “snakes in the dressing room” gag, “A” ups the ante on Aria in Season 4 when she sics bees on Aria’s mom. Maybe it was the execution of this scene (just open the car door, Ella!) but watching Aria’s mom get attacked by bees in her own car came off as kind of ridiculous.
The Liars get a clue from a parrot (Season 4, Episode 2: “Turn of the Shoe”)
Speaking of animals drawn into the “A” game, Tippi the Parrot saw a lot of screen time (or at least more screen time than we ever thought PLL would give her) as the Liars tried to decipher the clue of Tippi’s “song.” It turns out it was the telephone number for the secret room at the Cicero College sorority house Ali was using to call Mrs. Grunwald. This particular clue actually yielded some impressive results, but we couldn’t help but give a “WTF?” when the Liars started getting their information from a parrot.
Ezra is “A” (Season 4, Episode 12: “Now You See Me, Now You Don’t”)
We’re guessing this particular storyline will make more sense once it has been further explored, but for now it makes our list of top WTF moments because it really did confuse us. Has Ezra been pretending not to know Ali this entire time? Why is he stalking the Liars? And isn’t he more of a “black beanie” over a “black cap” sort of guy? Basically, WTF?
