In the Pretty Little Liars Season 4 summer finale, Mrs. Grunwald told the Liars that Ali (Sasha Pieterse) was still alive and on the run from her tormenter. This leads us to the question: does Mrs. DiLaurentis know that her own daughter is alive? We speculate below.

Yes, and she’s in on her plans

Why else would she keep Ali’s room so pristine? And why move back to Rosewood at all? We think there’s a chance Mrs. D. knows exactly what Ali is up to, and is doing her part to help her out. After all, who better to keep an eye on Rosewood, aka “A”’s stomping ground, than Ali’s own mother? Where do you think Ali got her cunning and acting ability? Pretending to be the grieving mother while secretly gathering information for her daughter seems right up her alley.

Yes, and she doesn’t know where she is

Of course, Ali and her mother were never particularly close. Mrs. D. was super controlling and Ali made a hobby of testing her mother’s limits. If Ali did fake her death, we can think about a dozen people she would rather go to for help than her own mother. That being said, Mrs. D. could totally know her daughter is alive maybe the girl she chased down in the park really was Ali. The simmering resentment between these two goes both ways. If Ali did reach out to her mother for help, could Mrs. D. have sent her away? Is that why she is so upset?

No, she is way too upset to know

In Season 4, Episode 10: “The Mirror Has Three Faces,” we were witness to just how torn up Mrs. D. is about Ali’s “death.” The woman’s practically catatonic. And don’t even get us started on the way she creepily keeps Ali’s room just as it was. The Liars don’t exactly make a habit of telling the truth to their parental figures, and we don’t think Ali was any different. When she was in trouble before her disappearance, she sought help from Mrs. G. before her own mother. Also, if Ali is Red Coat, then why would she stay in the DiLaurentis house crawl space if her mother knew she was alive? You’d think she might be able to sleep in her own bed or, at least the couch.

Do you think Ali’s mom knows she’s alive? Why or why not? Share your theories in the comments below!
