We're anticipating a few big reveals during the Pretty Little Liars Halloween episode (“Grave New World”), but one of the scenes we’re not looking forward to is Hanna and Caleb’s goodbye. Why? Because it makes us sad! By the end of the episode, Hanna and Liars will be hightailing it back to Rosewood, leaving Caleb to uncover some of Ravenswood’s biggest mysteries.

Even though we’re not ready to say goodbye to Haleb, we’re excited to see Ashley Benson and Tyler Blackburn deliver powerful performances, and according to Pretty Little Liars boss Marlene King, we won’t be disappointed.

“For me the scene that I was most interested in writing and the most interested in filming is the scene where Hanna gives Caleb permission to stay in Ravenswood,” Marlene told Wetpaint Entertainment at the October 15th screening of the Halloween episode.

“It’s sad, it’s empowering, but it’s sad,” she said. “It’s heartfelt, so it’s not just scary this episode, it’s heartfelt too.”

According to Marlene, Hanna only “thinks he’s going for the night,” so the goodbye doesn’t feel as final. She continued: “He doesn’t think she’s letting him go for a show!”

With Caleb wrapped up in a deadly curse in Ravenswood, Hanna starts to hit the books (literally!) back in Rosewood. “She’s very upset that Caleb is gone,” Marlene told us. “So she throws herself into these detective novels and she sets out for the first time not rely on Spencer but herself to discover who ‘A’ is.”

But that’s not the only thing Hanna is going to do to occupy her time. Thanks to some encouragement from Mrs. Marin, the two share a fun mother-daughter bonding scene in Season 4B.

“We got to throw a lot of plates against a wall mother-daughter bonding!” Ashley Benson told Wetpaint. “She helps her get over [Caleb],” added Marlene.

“Yeah, she’s kind of Hanna’s rock this season,” Ashley dished.

Despite the obvious heartbreak, we’re excited to see Hanna and Ashley spend some quality time together when PLL returns in January 2014. Considering Ashley Marin spent the majority of Season 4 thus far behind bars, we think they both could use a little pick-me-up!
