She’s back! In tonight’s wild Halloween episode of Pretty Little Liars (Season 4, Episode 13: "Grave New World"), Caleb meets a new friend; Spencer kicks ass with a pair of scissors; and Hanna channels her inner Superman by hanging out in a phone booth.
Wherein Hanna Tells Caleb to Go Hang Out with a Random Hot Chick
Sigh. Well, we knew it was coming. But that didn’t make it any less sad when Hanna and Caleb parted ways when Hanna told Caleb to stay in Ravenswood to help his new pal Miranda find her maybe-dead uncle. Our inner monologue during that scene: “Nooooooo! Don’t leave her, Caleb!”
Hanna faced serious danger tonight (rats!), but much of tonight’s episode revolved around Caleb, who meets Miranda on the only bus ride that’s worse than the one in the movie Speed. So will Caleb and Miranda become an item on Ravenswood? If Caleb has to be with someone besides Hanna, it might as well be someone as sassy as Miranda. Plus, we like that Caleb and Miranda have the exact same hair.
Wherein Spencer Grabs Pruning Shears Now and Asks Questions Later
Need a hand? Ezra — if he is in fact Scary Gas Mask Guy — could probably use one after Spencer slices his palm with a pair of gardening shears. Heck, Spencer could use a new finger herself after she pricks her hand on that evil plant. But doesn’t Spencer know that you have to make sure the bad guy is knocked out before you try to take off his mask? That’s like Horror Movie 101.
So is Ezra indeed the guy who fights Spencer and finally knocks her out? After all, when Ezra gives the girls a ride at the end of the episode, he conspicuously keeps his right hand in his jacket pocket the entire time. Very suspicious.
Wherein Aria Helps Random People Out of Open Graves
Ezra has a knack for surprising timing, like when he happens to deliver Aria’s phone just after Ali removes her red hood and reveals herself to the girls. By the way, shouldn’t Ali have chosen a safer place than to show herself to the girls just after Ezra had left? Ali has already gone this long without showing herself to the Liars, so she probably could have gone another five or ten minutes.
And who were those people whom the Liars are following at the beginning of the episode? There’s a girl named Lea and a guy who is supposedly her cousin. We’re guessing these people aren’t to be trusted, although no one on this show is to be trusted.
Wherein Emily Needs to Do a Better Job of Inspecting Open Windows
All of the girls make some stupid decisions this week as they end up in the secret basement, tunnel, and then creepy mansion with a phone booth in it. (Why was there a phone booth? We're still not sure?) Stupid decision number one: Why would they not keep someone standing by the door to the basement to make sure no one locks it? And then how did Hanna not think to keep an eye on the phone booth door?
But perhaps the least intelligent decision was when Em and Aria don’t realize that a bunch of sharp glass is about to impale them above that open window, a la Ghost. Always think before you jump, Emily.
— Okay, so first thing’s first: We were at first a bit underwhelmed by the episode until Ali showed herself, and then we loved it! Indeed, we had assumed Ali was alive after the Season 4A finale, but now we finally have concrete evidence! Oops — we probably shouldn’t use the word “concrete” about someone who possibly was buried alive.
— Ali tells Hanna to remember what she told her in the hospital. To refresh your memory, Ali’s hospital message was: “You four remember more about that night than you think you do.” So does that mean the rest of Season 4 will be spent remembering what happened that night?
— Ezra certainly appears to be “A,” now that we see him holding the gas mask and following the girls at the Ravenswood cemetery party. So is he indeed the guy whose hand Spencer sliced? Well, we did notice that Ezra was hiding his hand in his pocket when he offered the girls a ride and when he gave Aria her phone.
— We just want to point out that Ezra perhaps got his hand injured during last year’s Halloween episode as well, when Aria stabbed someone with a screwdriver. The dude has bad luck with his hands each year in late October. Also, how did Ezra change so quickly at the beginning of tonight's episode, from the dark top into the gas mask costume?
— Creepy Ms. Grunwald tells the Liars that one of them was touched by the person whom Ali fears. Does this confirm that Ezra is indeed conspiring against the Liars?
— Hanna finally sees the faces of the two kids in coats whom she had been following, and it turns out that one of them is actually an adult woman. So is this trying to tell us something about Ali? Maybe Ali is actually a member of the AARP?
Other Things To Be Discussed:
— So the Liars manage to make it out of the mansion relatively unscathed, except for Spencer, who gets her finger pricked by a plant. Was there some significance to this? Also, we don't get why Spencer can outwit everything and everyone, but she can’t outwit vegetation.
— Let’s get this straight: Miranda risked her safety and well-being by trying to steal a weird guy’s corn chips? Seriously — corn chips? C’mon, PLL — no one is risking anything for disgusting, dry corn chips.
