Spencer (Troian Bellisario) is a complex character on Pretty Little Liars, with her share of quirks and flaws but is one of those flaws a past drug problem? Here are three reasons we think Spencer is hiding a history of drug abuse.

She has a secret

Back in August, we learned that Spencer has a secret. A big one. That she’s been keeping since Day One. According to Troian, “You get to learn the most fun secret about Spencer, and that’s why wasn’t she with the rest of the girls when they woke up and why was she awake to hear Alison scream. As we’re going through the season you’re hearing a lot more and understanding more about the night and Spencer’s state and why she had the fight with Alison.” A secret that affected her state-of-mind and had her sneaking out of a sleepover in the middle of the night? Sounds like a drug problem fits the bill.

The pressures of her parents

Spencer’s life has long been affected by the overbearing pressure of her parents. They expect nothing short of perfection from her, and the fact that Spencer’s older sister, Melissa, has seemingly lived up to those impossible expectations, only puts more pressure on teenaged Spencer. Though Spencer is usually a smart girl who makes good decisions, we could see the desire to please her parents leading her to err in the form of taking drugs to give her more energy to get everything done.

Her upcoming storyline

Though we doubt Spencer has been maintaining a drug problem this entire time (perhaps, Ali’s death shocked her out of it?), we know she may develop a dependence on drugs in Season 4B. According to E! Online, Spencer will start taking a “study drug” to keep up with all of the school and “A” work thrown at her. Is this the beginning of Spencer’s dependence on drugs or is it a relapse to a time before Alison died?
